Mr. Football?

Featured Replies

Simply put, the All-State teams and Mr. Football are not a priority for The Associated Press. They get them done when they get them done.

Bigger fish to fry in our great nation, but waiting this long to announce Mr Football is ridiculous.

Since this award goes to a Senior Football player it should be a career award, not a season award. If it's going to be a season award then any player Freshman on up should win it!

You don't have to

be a senior to win it. Juniors have been on the finalist list before.

If if I had a say, Dante Hendrix wins it.

I saw on twitter where the "live" voting was open today. Whatever that means.

Thanks Jason! Appreciate your efforts to keep everyone updated! You do a great job!

My only issue remains with the seemingly mystic nature of the Mr. Football award. I am fine with the award coming out whenever as long as it's stated so. Same thing with the criteria for the award itself. I am not miffed with the Associated Press or the media that are just doing their job. I am miffed at how can an award of this stature not have some more formal criteria. And I'm not saying down to a fine tooth comb, just something to use as an established general guideline going forward.

I agree with you on all counts. I can tell you this: A few years ago, some Courier-Journal guys met with some Associated Press guys to see if The C-J could take over the award with the hopes of making it a more clear and open process. We were told "no." Now, that doesn't mean The C-J (or anyone else) couldn't start their own Mr. Football award, but that would probably be overkill and very confusing as long as the AP continues to name its Mr. Football.

All 8 on the list are Seniors! Name a underclassman who has won Mr. Football? Junior's have made the finalist list, but I don't believe an underclassman has won the award.

As for the "Can a junior win the award?" question: Yes, a junior can win the award. With the way the AP now does the voting (with no set criteria), juniors can be nominated for Mr. Football and win it.

However, as someone who was brought up with the notion that Mr. Football is a senior-only award, I'll never vote for or even nominate an underclassman. I believe the original spirit of the award was that it was for seniors only, and I will continue that tradition despite the AP no longer placing that restriction on the voting.

Thanks Jason!

I don't mind it being an AP Voted award and applaud the CJ for trying to step to the forefront..but sure would be nice if there was a sense of ownership above it where people knew the stipulations of why and how they need to align their vote.

Ah well.. I guess... sounds like you guys at the CJ sure did your part to foster it as it was needed though so kudos!

I know he would not win but he certainly should have been included as a finalist for not only what he has done at the WR position (1st team All-State and 6A Player of the Year) but also for having been a lockdown corner leading the State in INTs in '15 (2nd team All-State) and tied for the lead in INTs thru the regular season this year. No big deal but certainly worth being considered as a finalist.

Congrats to all the nominees and good luck to whoever wins.

Looking at the total statistics for Wood and Carothers, my jaw dropped. Those two should be 1a and 1b in the final voting.

Jake Johnson was an honor to watch for four years helping Pulaski County accomplish a State Championship appearance every year putting Pulaski on the map for years to come. I think the State Finals proved how vital he was to the success of this years team and any questions people may of had should've been answered with his senior campaign.

There's no wrong choice as all are deserving candidates. Congrats to all on being nominated.

Pretty impressive for little old Mayfield to have two of the eight finalists.
