Mr. Football?

Featured Replies

I will not say who shouldn't be in the list that is already on the list because I will not take anything away from those finalist named. They I'm sure are all great kids and players etc. I will give the name that I think was blatantly left off and that is Dante Hendrix.

We wont get into a debate that diminishes what any of the finalists accomplished. Not here to do that. I congratulate all that made the list. I just think their has been a big omission and was curious to why?

Seriously just curious. Because if Dante is in, means someone is out. So who's out? You are already diminishing it by saying someone was blatantly left off. Which could only mean that someone blatantly got in who shouldn't have...right? Come on, take the bait ?

Walker Wood is in the 60/60 club!

Even more impressively Walker is a part of the 70/70 club! He might even be the only member of that in state history but someone should double-check the (very) limited research I did on that.

I read in the Lexington Herald he was in the 60/60 club if 70/70 that is even better.

So this answers one of my previous questions, it's a career award. Thanks for clearing that up.

So not being from KY. Can seniors only win Mr. Basketball? If that's the case why isn't Mr. Football strictly a Senior award?

Did you miss the part where I said THIS YEAR he broke the single season reception record by 31 catches?

This is not true. There is no limit to the nominees. I can nominate 25 people if I want, and so, too, can any of the other voters. There are literally ZERO parameters to this thing. Like I said before: I nominated the four guys I thought were more deserving. Only four other people were nominated around the state.

Thanks for the clarification. In this case does seem like a "snubb" then. Especially when it's not really clear on what the grading criteria is. I can see both sides of the argument.

Really, it's not that serious. Just asking.

Remember, Jamale Caruthers did not play in hardly any 4th quarters in regular season and was done after 1st possession of 3rd quarter a handful of times. BG looked to the air first and Carruthers second. If he played entire game and was #1 option he would have nationally ranked numbers for this past season. Add to the fact he is a champ off the field gives him a real chance for this award

Also, BGHS QB, Clark Payne, who is not a finalist threw for 3,840 yards/ 44 TDS with only 4 INTs Like Caruthers, didn't play much in the second half of most games. Compare his #s with QB finalist #s . Not much difference.

When I think of criteria for a Mr. Ky Football, I can't help but think of things above and beyond outstanding on field performance. Certainly Johnson and Woods stats are mind plowing and valid arguments could be made either way. Are there intangible differences, or should they even be considered?

How many "running clock" games did Trinity have ? 8 or 9?

And I am just asking back. You took my post and stated that it clarifies this is a career award. I wanted to make sure you saw that some of the stats I posted were for this year.

I have nothing against Johnson as he is a GREAT player but my personal opinion is whether he broke the reception record or not he would have gotten the nomination based upon his past credentials from his freshman year. The single season reception record is extremely good however if you know Pulaski's offense nearly every pass was thrown his way as he was clearly their best player, nothing wrong with that but he is also listed on many career categories as well. I would venture to say he didn't make the list JUST for his receptions this year so we can agree to disagree and that's ok because there is no "known" criteria established. He is certainly worthy and belongs on the list as do all of the other players listed.

I do not believe it diminishes the award. It calls into question the process/criteria. Several folks have had questions on here about the process. To me -- how did Hendrix win 6A POY over some of the finalists for Mr Football but not make the final list for Mr Football? I don't think anyone has a problem with the players on the list. They are all very, very good players who have had an outstanding year and would deserve to win it.

All awards, however, do have questions about the process/criteria they go through. And when the finalists or the winners are announced there will always be opinions about who made it and who didn't. Go through all-state teams, all-star teams, pro bowl selections, etc and there is usually some opinion piece about who should have made it. Who made the final four for the college football playoffs -- there were some different opinions on that. The people who vote have to make a decision and not everyone can be on the list. Just the way it is.

I get what people are saying about the criteria question for sure. It's a confusing situation. The year Barker won 5A POY, someone else from 5A was Mr. FB. Dante Hendrix should of absolutely been a finalist for this award. No way the 6A POY is not a finalist.

The thing about the class-by-class Player of the Year awards is that they're voted on by the Kentucky Football Coaches Association, which is a whole other ball of wax. I'm almost certain you have to be a paid member of the KFCA for your players and coaches to be considered for those awards. I've seen some VERY curious selections for those awards over the years.

I understand that it can be confusing for fans. You've got the KFCA putting out awards, the Courier-Journal, the Herald-Leader, the Associated Press and more. And there's never a consensus. How can a guy be the KFCA Class 6-A Player of the Year and not be a nominee for Mr. Football? Because the people making those choices have nothing to do with each other.

If you think these awards are bad or ill-conceived, I encourage you to study the all-district teams from the Louisville area. Those never make any sense.
