Mr. Football?

Featured Replies

Simply put, the All-State teams and Mr. Football are not a priority for The Associated Press. They get them done when they get them done.

I agree with you on all counts. I can tell you this: A few years ago, some Courier-Journal guys met with some Associated Press guys to see if The C-J could take over the award with the hopes of making it a more clear and open process. We were told "no." Now, that doesn't mean The C-J (or anyone else) couldn't start their own Mr. Football award, but that would probably be overkill and very confusing as long as the AP continues to name its Mr. Football.

It should come out soon. I looked back at the dates of the threads of the last 2 Mr. Footballs and they were both the first week in January. So anything...... I guess....

This is not true. There is no limit to the nominees. I can nominate 25 people if I want, and so, too, can any of the other voters. There are literally ZERO parameters to this thing. Like I said before: I nominated the four guys I thought were more deserving. Only four other people were nominated around the state.[/color]

43 days since the last day of High School Football and no Mr. Football award......

Going on 10 days past the "normal" submittal of the Mr. Football award....

I am told above "it is not the Associated Press's priority"..... Yet they will not relinquish any control of it.....

However, in reviewing this informational perspective, I have come to the following conclusion:

It is those that select the voters in this lazy process that are to blame for the majority of the angst, consternation, and at times down-right disgust at the lackadaisical nature of arguably the most important award of the entire high school football season.

What do I base this on? @Jason Frakes nominated half of the entire nominated list. One voter. The entire remaining voters nominated 4 (and that could be 1 other voter). So basically the majority of the voters for the Mr Football award just show up and vote with what would be IMO little to no research and/or no knowledge of the players being voted on. Again this is based on "not a priority" as stated above.

I want to thank journalist that I know that do a great job supporting and reporting on HS Football including @Jason Frakes, @chrisjung, and Josh Moore to name 3 I am confident on.

What about the rest of the voters??? Change is needed in this regard.

I know the announcement is coming any day now but this is crazy of how long they have waited. Can they not have a standing date every year?? How hard is it to have the announcement come on the first Monday in January every year? This would give three weeks or so to review and make the announcement. If not the first Monday in January, the second. Whatever the date, decide and communicate to the state when announcement will be made. You have great fans throughout the state, great players (all finalists are more than capable of winning the award every year) with a handful of guys that can vote for the award that apparently could care less. It just puts a huge damper on things.

This is a sad mishandling of a prestigious award. This award matters. It matters to the kid, to the school, and to the recipient community.

This is a shame.

Nope I don't understand why it takes so long to name Mr. Football.

It takes a while for the votes to be bought.

This is shameful. Kids deserve better. To be announced in the latter half of January is a disgrace. Regardless of how this award is regulated, someone is obviously not be held responsible. If a group is willing to take over and monitor the process, I am all for a change.

Is all this venom really necessary? For a high school football award? I don't understand it. Do you complainers just have too much time on your hands these days and not enough to worry about?

Whoever wins the award will be happy and the award will be cherished just as much as if it were awarded two weeks ago. I don't think they will consider it a disgrace, a sad mishandling or a shame. I realize we have become a people of instant gratification, but come on. A little perspective and priorities may be the prescription here.

Pretty serious accusation. You have any evidence to back that up?

This award can be very beneficial in recruiting to whoever receives it, because it gets their name out there and can be the selling point to get a kid from a preferred walk-on to scholarship player. So waiting this long when most other states have already announced their Mr. Football can potentially hold up a players recruitment.

2C,

You have some good points for the other side of the tetter-totter, but this isn't the District 2 Player of the Week Award. It's the biggest award for the entire season. I honestly don't have as big a grip with the time issue as the procedure of this award. Just state what the criteria is and when it will be awarded. (i.e. The award will be presented to the player with the best season in a respective year. (or whatever you select - Career totals, etc.) The award will be presented on January 15th following each season.) That's it!! Do that and all this goes away.

I really don't think it is that hard. I just feel the apathy in this situation concerning kids who basically work at their craft year around now. Could I be off base - sure, but I honestly don't think I am here.

Out of curiosity, what has been the standard lead time for Mr. Basketball to be selected following the completion of the Sweet 16 in recent years?

Anyone know?

I can see where that might be a legitimate reason for concern. Much better than most I've read.

Typically, though, the kid who wins this award is either already committed or is high enough on the recruiting radar that I'm not sure the MrF award carries that much weight. I can see where it might help a kid who is on the bubble, but on the flip side I think these college recruiters base their decisions more on the measurable than a players accolades.

That is true for recruiting hotbeds like Florida and Texas, but Ky is not a highly recruited area traditionally so players from Ky are generally always on the bubble with a couple exceptions each year. I do agree that they focus more on measurables, but for our state specifically MrF can definitely make a difference

ATL,

According to the Mr. Basketball... Who you got? Thread started back on February 20th, 2016 over in the HS Basketball Forum:

http://bluegrasspreps.com/ky-boys-basketball/mr-basketball-who-323423.html

@Yellow Card posted #191 that voting for Mr. Basketball is due by February 26th and the awards ceremony is conducted on March 15th. By reading through the thread, this appears to be the case. @PurplePride92 is this correct to your knowledge? In other words, a clear agenda for a specific timeframe for the award.

February 26th is before the Sweet 16 for sure.

Paul Lawrence Dunbar beat Doss 61-52 on March 20, 2016 to win the 2015/2016 State Championship.

In other words, Mr. Basketball was awarded prior to the completion of the Sweet 16 (playoffs).

It seems clear which is a priority and which is not. And it is sad that both can not be.
