Mr. Football?

Featured Replies

All 8 on the list are Seniors! Name a underclassman who has won Mr. Football? Junior's have made the finalist list, but I don't believe an underclassman has won the award.

I never said an underclass man won. I said they can win or they wouldn't have underclassmen make the finals list as they have in the past. Just stating a fact.

I know he would not win but he certainly should have been included as a finalist for not only what he has done at the WR position (1st team All-State and 6A Player of the Year) but also for having been a lockdown corner leading the State in INTs in '15 (2nd team All-State) and tied for the lead in INTs thru the regular season this year. No big deal but certainly worth being considered as a finalist.

Congrats to all the nominees and good luck to whoever wins.

The award once again proves to be nothing more than a popularity contest. There is no way Hendrix should not have at least made the finalist list.

The award is a joke. Once again it has less to do with how they did their senior season vs their peers but more to do with where they are going to play at the next level. Sad.

The need to totally dismiss the award because someone who was NEVER GOING TO WIN IT wasn't nominated is what's sad. The award boils down to Carothers, Wood, Johnson and Blackburn. I don't think there's any arguing that. All four were nominated, and all four would be worthy winners. The rest is just ego. Also, two of those four haven't even committed to colleges, so don't tell me it has "more to do with where they are going to play at the next level."

Walker Wood is in a whole nother league. Over 60 passing tds and over 60 rushing tds. Also over 30/30 his Senior year.

When the award is "supposed" to go to the best football player yet there were players left off the list who were among the best, if not the best among their peers who did make the list does diminish the award imo.

So your excuse for leaving someone off the list who was better than some on the list in the first place is simply because he wouldn't have won? Then why have a list in the first place? That may be one of the silliest arguments ever made about any award.

Funny you say that because there was a local qb a couple years ago you couldn't stand that had similar numbers and you repeated over and over again he shouldn't win it that year.

I nominated the guys I thought were most deserving. I can't speak for anyone else.

It is what it is. Just a shame that if you're not on the radar going into the season then it's just about impossible to make the list even when stats should play a huge part in the award yet stats are not even considered for some if they aren't popular. you have no shot at getting recognized for what is supposed to be the biggest award in the state for a player. There are players that made the finalist list that weren't even the best in their district at their positions even when they played similar schedules, and don't say stats don't matter when that is all that is posted next to each finalist. It is what it is and always will be.

Congrats to all the finalists.

Do I agree Hendrix should have made it ? Absolutely. But to call the award a joke is completely unfair to the players that were nominated. "Congrats Son, you won Mr. KY Football !!! By the way, the award is a joke" Not a fair statement.

The award itself isn't a joke. The way the nomination process ignores some players is a joke imo.

In the end one of the most deserving players will usually win it, but the thought of "well so and so wouldn't win it anyway so it's no big deal he was left off the list" is what diminishes the nominations if you ask me.

If the AP voters look at the nominations that way then the list is usually made up of popularity contest winners and some very deserving players are completely ignored. Would they have won it? Maybe not, but when the nominated players are listed with their stats as if that is what they are being judged by, then nominate all the players the same way, not just by their name alone.

Looking at the stats, I agree that it is between those four. But the stats that are the most mind boggling belong to Jake Johnson. He obliterated the record book. Hard not to vote for him. He has 134 more career receptions than the number two receiver (James Quick). He has 630 more career yards than number two. He had 31 more receptions this year than anyone ever had in a single season. He destroyed records this year and for his career. He would get my vote.

^John Cole destroyed most of those records throughout his career as well and didn't win. Johnson should win it IMO. If I was betting the farm on who will win though, I'd go with Wood.

Funny you say that because there was a local qb a couple years ago you couldn't stand that had similar numbers and you repeated over and over again he shouldn't win it that year.

Barker only had 30/30 or 40/40. And Walker Wood is better qb than Barker more speed. Wood is a winner back to back 6A state finals. When Barker played for Conner thry barely jad a winning record.

Best player on the Best team. Plus 2 thrashings of another candidates team. Spencer Blackburn.
