Mr. Football?

Featured Replies

ATL,

According to the Mr. Basketball... Who you got? Thread started back on February 20th, 2016 over in the HS Basketball Forum:

http://bluegrasspreps.com/ky-boys-basketball/mr-basketball-who-323423.html

@Yellow Card posted #191 that voting for Mr. Basketball is due by February 26th and the awards ceremony is conducted on March 15th. By reading through the thread, this appears to be the case. @PurplePride92 is this correct to your knowledge? In other words, a clear agenda for a specific timeframe for the award.

February 26th is before the Sweet 16 for sure.

Paul Lawrence Dunbar beat Doss 61-52 on March 20, 2016 to win the 2015/2016 State Championship.

In other words, Mr. Basketball was awarded prior to the completion of the Sweet 16 (playoffs).

It seems clear which is a priority and which is not. And it is sad that both can not be.

Correct. We know who Mr. Basketball is very quickly as soon as the season is over. Two different organizations take care of these awards.

Thanks Pride!!! And there you have it!!!

This is how it is done in Tennessee. Obviously, the awards handed out in Tennessee are done in a timely, classy fashion. Perhaps it is time for coaches and media to get together to see if football can be better promoted and the Mr. Football award can be better served by putting in the hands of someone other than the AP. 5 from Nashville area named Mr. Football

Pretty serious accusation. You have any evidence to back that up?

Straight from someone that gets a vote.

It takes a while for the votes to be bought.

Would this really surprise anyone? After what CoachJ said about vote swapping for All-State -- why would this award be any different? With the way kids have a tougher time getting recruited in Ky, being on the all-state team or being Mr Football can make a difference and it is a big deal for kids. Kids work hard for these awards and to have votes swapped, bought, or anything else is shameful. And for the announcement to take this long just boggles the mind. As was stated earlier in the thread -- set the criteria and the date and be done with it. Not hard.

Colleges could care less about All State and/or Mr. Football.

Still...this award is gaining tarnish by the day.

Totally agree. I mean, it's a shame what's going on with the award. But the notion that the delay might hurt someone's recruiting is total hogwash.

Put 5 names in a hat and pick one. Best way to do it. Fate will take over.

I would wager at least 1/2 the guys on this list may disagree with you...

* Landon Arnett, Mayfield quarterback (uncommitted)

* Spencer Blackburn, Trinity quarterback (uncommitted)

* Geordan Blanton, Johnson Central athlete (Marshall baseball commit)

* Trajon Bright, Mayfield running back (uncommitted)

* Jamale Carothers, Bowling Green running back (Navy commit)

* Jake Johnson, Pulaski County wide receiver (uncommitted)

* Tanner Morgan, Ryle quarterback (Western Michigan commit)

* Walker Wood, Lafayette quarterback (Kentucky commit)

My point wasn't that colleges would all of a sudden recruit a kid because he is on a list or got an individual award. The point really is getting the kids name out there. He gets some ink because of it. That could lead to someone (a recruiter, scout, anyone really) to take a look at their video, measurables, etc -- that could lead to something. I read on this site that a big part of recruiting is name recognition. If colleges never hear of you its hard to get a look. And yes, even in todays age, that can happen. Those awards can give a kid that little bump needed to get someone to, at the very least, take a look. Where it goes from there is anyone's guess.

How many voters are there? Is there an AP voter in NKY?

I've never heard a college coach ask about stats, all-state teams, or Mr. Football. They are paid to evaluate & recruit players that can help their program win. An award that takes the AP 2 months to decide will not influence that evaluation!

Some of the things that I hear people say influence college coaches make me chuckle.

If you're good enough to play in college the coaches will find you.
