The friendship between he and Ginsberg is the stuff of Washington legend. They regularly attended opera and music performances together. They're the most consistently clear and brilliant voices for their views of jurisprudence on the court right now and have been for years. Ultimately I think each respected the other for that.

This is Washington's version of "The Odd Couple"...

 

To my R friends, we have to be consistent. If Romney was president, we would all be saying that he gets the opportunity to select his nominee for the SC. Now the R's in the Senate do have the right to "Bork" whoever Obama selects if they don't like him or her. That is how it is supposed to work. I think McConnell made a big mistake coming out when Scalia's body was not even cold yet saying he would block Obama from nominating someone...makes him look small IMO. There was no reason to get into that issue so soon...

This is a devastating blow to Conservative causes. I do not believe the GOP leadership is handling it very well either. They are reacting emotionally and politically by threatening to stall the nomination of the replacement SCOTUS until after the election. This makes the the election a referendum on the court which will stimulate turnout is both parties, but generally benefiting liberal turnout. Definitely not a well thought out strategy. Makes me want to dump McConnell.

The problem you run into with that sort of labeling is that you also would likely lump many libertarians into that camp as well.

You haven't seen me doing it. I think the libertarians are really sick of the social conservatives and how they have hijacked the Republican party from fiscal conservatives. The Tea Party should have been about libertarian ideals, instead it became the rallying cry for all manner of far right activity which frankly alienated those of us who don't care who or what you worship, who or what you marry, who or what you put in your body, and most of all who or what you spend your money on (be it your constitutionally guaranteed right to a firearm or a hideous car like a Prius).

 

The influence of people who want to tell me what I can and can't do with myself as long as no one is harmed is ever present in the Republican and Democratic parties. You guys are just louder about it on here than they are so we are more likely to go after you all.

Well said and, thus, the divide in the GOP. I don't agree with either on most fronts, however, you hit the nail on the head.

 

What the social conservatives seem to forget, is the reason they lost the last two national elections is their intolerance of anyone basically different than them (in general).

The longest it has ever taken to confirm a Supreme Court nominee is 125 days. Obama has 361 days left in office.
