Belfry vs. Newport Central Catholic

Featured Replies

You gotta love the Trading Places reference--I respect your opinion, Sticky--but I can't say that I agree with the second part.

Beechwood/NCC has become a rivarly in the last 5-6 years. And usually--the better team wins (with a few exceptions). And that is also true with CCH/Highlands. (Again--with a few exceptions). It comes down to the fact that the better team wins the vast majority of the time. It may not be the most talented team--but the "better" team. The rivalry angle is something that I don't buy into--because that goes along the lines that the best team doesn't win as much as they should.

On topic--This is a very interesting game.

Gametime--I love to read your work--but I think I would avoid meeting any Belfry fan after the game--because this one may turn out differently than you think. If Belfry can capitalize on NCC's lack of experience--and play their normal brand of hard nose defense--they have a just as good of a chance to win this game.

I know that NCC is good--but again--being "nearsighted Northern Kentuckians" is not going to help NCC (or their fans) in this game. If Belfry controls the ball--they win. It will force the new NCC qb into rushing the passing game--which doesn't work for NCC (they are best when they can use the run to set up the pass--as opposed to vice versa--like most people think).

Not to mention--they are probably one of the more physical teams that NCC is going to see this year.

If Belfry controls the ball, But if NCC's Defensive line is as good as last years, I think that it will be tough for them. NCC played Ryle last year and They tried ball control and the time of posession(sp?) was heavily in NCC's favor.

I beleive this will be a good game. Whoever wins it will be a close score. IMO.

I don't think that any of us are forgetting about it. I just think that some of us (with an unbiased viewpoint) have seen Belfry play before--and know that they have a few kids coming back as well.

NCC may very well win this game--but in my humble opinion--this is a very dangerous game for NCC if Belfry has any success running the ball at all. (Ball control could hurt NCC's momentum with a new QB. Especially considering the fact that this will be the first game for a new NCC qb (and I am aware that all available NCC qb's do have more than just a little football skill). The offense line will help NCC--but Belfry is going to play solid, fundamental ball control football.

Belfry has the potential to rough NCC up a little bit. From past dealings--they are a pretty physical team--playing pretty close to home.

I just don't see this as the definite domination that my little brother mak sees . . . . . .

Regardless--I think it will be a great game to start out the year. And it is a definite step up in scheduling for NCC.

From recent NewCath history, they have been stout against the run under Coach Wagner. CovCath, Ryle, nor Beechwood gained much against them last year. However, pass defense in the flats and curl zones has been an achilles heel. They cured that at the end of last season. Belfry would be wise to use play action. NewCath tends to have a lot of pride in it's team speed on defense, and too often overcommits. However, if Harris or Diehl can do 80% of what Sammy did last year, it will be tough for Belfry to defend. It's gonna be a great game. I don't know enough about Belfry to pick a winner.

"Looking good BillyRay!":creepy:

"Feeling good Louis!"

Beechwood/NCC is like HHS/CCH...records don't matter. Not a good gauge...

Gametime brought Beechwood into it...:creepy:

My point was that Belfry would beat NCC 6 out of 8 years, which I stand by.

My point was directed at someone that said Belfry is a fundamentally sound as it gets. NCC knows what that looks like, so they will not be suprised.

You are entitled to your opinion. Everybody has one...

Fair enough. Looking forward to a great game.

Belfry is generally very well coached and fundamentally sound. However, as mentioned above, they are typically slow starters and NCC is no stranger to good football.

I think this will be a fairly evenly matched game, but IMO that would be true on a consistent basis. I don't think it could be said with any surety that either of these teams would win more than half of the games against each other.

This time around NCC will have a decided speed advantage, which can be huge in early season games. Vicars impressed me a lot both times I saw him play last season.

Belfry will be returning two 1200+ yd rushers and about half of the front 7. They return a veteran defense for the most part but will miss their two stud DE's and their do-it-all RB/DB, Maynard.

Both teams have to break in new QB's.

Should be a fun night to kick off the season, I can't wait.

In my opinion, it would be tough to find an eight-year stretch where we could say with confidence that Belfry would beat Newport Catholic six times.

Nothing against Belfry ... Newport Catholic is a fine program, one of the best among Kentucky's smaller schools.

This is Belfry back yard not northern Kentucky, this will be a good game and a tough one for NewCath to win. I take Belfry to win and to show NewCath what it means to live on a real river the Big sandy.

I agree 100% and the reverse is true.

Most Belfry fans I have talked to are looking forward to this game and have the utmost respect for the Breds, their excellent coaching staff and the brand of football they play. We know we will have to be on our toes and it will take a quality effort to come away with a win.

I agree with the last part--it will be a great game for both teams.

If people were saying the same thing about last years game with Pikeville--it wasn't me . . . . (at least--I hope not). And this year IS different for the following reasons:

1. IMO--Belfry is better than Pikeville

2. Belfry is a different type of team than Pikeville

3. NCC--has some inexperience at key positions--#1 being QB--this will be a great game to get through some growing pains--but there will be some pain--for sure (and that is true for both teams this early).

4. I have heard that NCC has a new D-Coordinator--(not sure if this is 100% true--so bear with me)--if it is--the Bone (as Belfry runs it) will be "interesting" to game plan against.

5. Belfry has big game experience. Pikeville didn't. I think that Belfry isn't going to be enamored or shellshocked the way that Pikeville quickly became.

6. Belfry is very fundamentally sound--which is something that NCC has issues with (offensively and defensively).

7. Belfry has one of the best coaching staffs in the state (and that is the truth). They will have a game plan (offensively and defensively) that is designed to win the game--just like NCC.

Again--I am not saying that NCC won't win this game. I have a great deal of respect for their program. They are a great team. I don't expect any different this year. But Belfry's has played just as good of football (IMO--and I have broken down a lot of football the last few years) as NCC.

I just think that right now, NCC has a couple question marks that need to be answered before they roll or even win this game. That could be answered in the preseason scrimmages--or after this game. But--I promise you--this shouldn't be a foregone conclusion that NCC wins this game.

I asked and the d-cordinator is still coach Wagner. I had not heard that they had a new one so I wanted to find out.

Cool.

I had actually heard it from someone--then I looked at the NCC website and didn't see his name listed as one of the coaches.

He obviously does a pretty good job for NCC. It is good for them that he is still around.

Has anyone heard that Belfry's projected starting QB broke his leg?

I heard this a couple of days ago, but it was through the grapevine.

Possible starting QB broke leg and ankle in a 4-wheeler accident. He was also a starter at corner for the Pirates.

I heard it. He was starting DB and one of the guys competing for the QB job. I didn't know if it was true or how bad it was supposed to be.

titleist beat me to it. :thumb:
