"Could have" is correct. Trained people with guns couldn't stop the carnage at Virginia Tech, Columbine or even Ft. Hood. Why would we have expected different results yesterday?

I fall into the "liberal" camp, as defined by the posters of BGP. However, I have never called for taking away the right to own guns. I've outlined what I feel needs to be changed with regard to gun ownership, but I've never called for taking away the right.

 

But, I do feel it's concerning that buying a gun is easier than buying Sudafed.

By no means am do I expect anyone on here to have "perfect," "good," and even a viable to solution to this problem. The fact of it is, even our top officials don't have a solution to this problem. That's not a slight to our officials. As history shows, those who act as lone wolves and engage in guerrilla tactics have rarely be prevented from doing so. Those such tactics are pretty much how we won the revolutionary war.

 

Few on the left, (and fewer on the left that are actually reasonable and not just grandstanding) realize that simply banning all guns is just not feasible solution. I guarantee that no matter how many officers you send to the hill of Kentucky searching for guns, you wont find them all. Aside from banning guns, I think it is pretty clear the simply making something illegal doesn't necessarily mean that it will cease to exist, and if anything makes them more prominent in the underground market and less easy to track, amplifying the problem.

 

If we are to find a solution to this problem, we need to cut out the silly rhetoric that plagues our politics today. No one believes that banning guns is a logistically possible solution, or that that solution would even work. At the same time, arming every American seems like a pretty silly notion as well. There needs to be a balance between arming responsible Americans, while doing everything possible to prevent those who don't meet a certain standard from attaining weapons.

That's all I'm asking for. My sarcasm is because every time something like this comes up and anyone suggests there be reform, this board explodes in the NRA rhetoric and the overblown hyperbole of "they're trying to take my guns". Even in this thread, there's a lot of that rhetoric. I'm tired of trying to have a reasonable, sensible conversation on this board about this subject. Mention even one change, and the group goes ballistic (pun intended).

When you start calling the shooter in Charlotte the Radical Christian Terrorist, we might be able to have a conversation. I refuse to believe a radical is worse because they're Muslim, than if they're Christian.

Whenever we have one of these mass shootings, the conversation usually turns -- as it did here -- to the Ft. Thomas crowd worrying about "the government" coming after their guns and ammo.

 

We now have about 360 million firearms in the US of A. More guns than people. Thanks Obama. (Sarcasm)

 

Lack of gun regulation is a two-sided coin. Get used to these mass shootings.

 

I only account for roughly 12 of those 360 million guns. I have two that were passed down from my grandpa. I hope my sentimental values towards these guns never hurts someone. I know the guns won't. As for the others well I like to be able to defend myself, I one day plan on taking up hunting and well I just like guns. I hope this doesn't hurt you because I know the guns I own won't. However I do do own some sketchy steak knives.....

Last I heard, there were no CCDW holders at these locations due to the ignorance of "Gun Free Zones". I will nearly guarantee one CCDW holder in that meeting room WOULD have made a difference.

 

Columbine shooters killed themselves before police arrived, VT shooter killed himself as police arrived, Ft. Hood terrorist knew his fellow soldiers would not be carrying weapons.

 

We see what happens when these people are pitted against those who are armed and trained. They fired on police and they lost.

But can you blame them? Maybe not on this board, but there are plenty of delusional left-leaners that think removing all guns from the civilians is a legitimate solution. That's the type of baseless rhetoric that needs to be dropped if this country ever wants to see an effective policy implemented.
