Work begins tomorrow on Turf at Newport...

Featured Replies

That may be so but we'll see how much control they keep having of it. There will be more changes to things than you think down there.

Why? Newport did what it did to help themselves. I applaud that, but now to somehow think your going to squeeze the turnup and all will be ok is kinda crazy. For one thing, most teams have enough trouble getting concession workers for their own games. Who is going to stay behind and work the concessions when the home team is playing away? Just how much money do you think a concession stand is going to bring in? And how much of that is profit? Alot of worry over a very small amount of money when you consider that your investing $600,000. You guys would be better served working Reds or Bengals games. Just my opinion.

To be honest Im not sure how they are going to do everything but i believe they are wanting to run it themselves for both teams home games. Ill have to get back to you on the concession stuff.

Although the stadium is very old, I still believe it to be one of the very best stadiums to watch high school football.

Agreed. I'd put Highlands and Holmes on that list as well.

I believe Bellevue's Gilligan stadium and Newports were opened around the same time......Gilligan Stadium--was originally dedicated in 1936.

Ludlows Rigney Field was built in the same era by the WPA and remains one of the very best places to enjoy a high school football game.

Agreed. I'd put Highlands and Holmes on that list as well.

I would certainly agree with Holmes. I saw a couple games there last year and it is a great place to watch games.

It has been a couple of years since I have been to a game at Highlands but do they still have the metal stands? Maybe I am a touch claustrophibic but I remember feeling confined in their stadium. I do like the cannon (although it is never good news for my team when we hear it). It does add to the atmosphere.

Holmes is nice but if it's filled to capacity (NCC/Bellvue) it's too small.

Drove by Newport Stadium on my way to work and did not see any signs of any Strip Mining going on. Not to scare anyone, but if the type of field Newport is putting in is like field turf you guys are losing precious time. Just ask LN how many more days Highlands would have like to had for thier install. I can remember the day of the first home game, it seemed like everyone in town was at the stadium with grass blowers, brooms and paint brushes.Time was cut so short that the hash-marks were not installed. They are still in a garbage can in the corner of the storage shed. Believe me, Highlands needed about another week and a half to properly get finished. Good Luck!!!!!

Just drove past the stadium and it's official, the old field is coming up and they are on their way to a new facility.

Boom another week and a half would have been a God send. We had a lot of volunteers bust their humps to make it as far as we got as you personally know. And the paid crew was great, often sleeping in their cars for a couple hours and getting back up and at it. Setting up canopys over the areas that the numerals needed to be installed so the rain would not slow them down. Stopping at about 4 in the morning on Friday, going home and getting some sleep and going back up there all day Friday was a real bummer. On the other hand, it was a lot of fun and every time I go to a game I, along with a lot of others, feel a lot of pride in what we accomplished in such a short time.

As for Newport, they should be okay. I think we met at the school board on July 24th, forced the city and school to agree to move forward before we'd let them leave the room, made some promises that we were not sure we could keep about financing, and the next day had folks up there removing the existing sod. We got it done in a month. Don't know when Newport's first home game, but they should have 6-8 weeks to get it done and that should be enough if the weather and the work force cooperates. I believe with the renewed pride that Dr. Brandt, Schlarman and others are creating in the Newport program, that if volunteers are needed to get it done, they'll be there to support the program and the kids. Might even have to have Henry make some sandwiches and coffee for the work crew that last week before Newport's first home game to keep them on the job and working.

Newport's first home game is the Bell Game against NCC August 25th.

They relate because NCC basically uses our field
Here's where your info gets mixed up.

That field is not NEwport High School's field.

That is why the AD will have nothing to do with what gets charged and so on.

That field belongs to the City of Newport. Not Newport High School, the AD can want to raise the rent for NCC and take over whatever, but it's not up to him in the slightest.

Doesn't the field actually belong to the school and that is why there wasnt turf put on sooner, because the city wanted control of the field as well if they were going to pay for the turf?

Here is where you have things all mixed up. The field will be bought and paid for by NEWPORT SCHOOLS. They exclusive rights to who does/does not play on it and for how much they will charge is totally up to the Newport BOE. I am 100% positive on this.

Actually I think you need to get your information straight before you attack me when your totally wrong. I didn't refer to the AD in any of my posts therefore take that up with somebody else. Now that it will be solely owned by NEWPORT HIGH SCHOOL they will have the say on what gets charged.

It appears that the tuition at NCC will need to be raised to cover the additional cost of not having a football field to play on.
