It's just amazing how many people think High School coaching is somehow similar to coaching college, too many variables that are out of a coaches hand in some of these situations. Put a Bob Beatty at Jenkins and see how many titles he's winning.

I will agree that schemes and coaching come into play, but I think that carries more when all other things are equal. Take for instance by all accounts, Highlands has had a down year,, but their scheme and system did not change,, just the players they have do not have the talent of past teams.

In regards to Lexington having talent, I agree there is a huge talent pool in the area. However, are those kids playing football or are they being lost to other sports. I do not think anything is done in a vacuum and I am not taking anything away from offensive and defensive schemes and coaching. However, I think the biggest impact to any programs success are the players on the field.

I will play devils advocate here though. you mention highlands. The question becomes, is it the talent that is down and so the scheme doesn't work... or is there a better scheme that would fit the talent? That is a big part of coaching high school football. You are not always going to have players that fit the schemes you want many times you need to be able to fit your schemes to the talent.

Coaching is a science and anyone who thinks otherwise has never done it. To be successful you need to be adaptable. Talent may change per say but is there a better way to utilize that talent to makes your team better.

serioulsly? This early? Gotta be a joke. Sure they are 3 & 6 with Central Hardin left to play @ CH which doesn't look good but dang give the guy some time to implement his system before you go heating up the seat.

Who do you have in mind coming there to replace him in your opinion @therealdealholyfield?

Parkey at Rockcastle Co. I think his time is done. He's had more than enough time, and he touted that THIS was going to be the year!!! He and that staff been saying that since he got there.

Too many scrimmages IYAM... Rockcastle was too tired once the regular season actually started after scrimmaging Half of Central KY already

As a head coach your responsible for building a program that will compete and if your not then that's going against the contract you signed... Being a teacher comes with it and you just have to figure how to manage it that's why most HC teach PE or special ED something easy so they can dedicate more time to the football team...when you apply for a college job for the first time the first thing they ask on your resume is have you been ssuccessful at the highschool level and that means wins and losses not how many kids graduated with a 4.0 GPA

Sorry as soon as you said SPED was an easy job you lost a lot of credibility. There are a lot of people in this thread that it is very clear they do not teach nor do they coach. If you think you can do it better or know how it works then put on a headset. There are so many factors it's not even funny. Get the best kids out? What about places where you have to fight baseball or basketball for those kids? Just hire a staff? Where are these guys going to get jobs? Lots of misconceptions about what it's really like.

As far as HHS and scheme goes. They did change their scheme. It's not the same as when Mueller was there.

I do not think most realize that you are responsible for football K-12. Your job the last time I checked was to develop your program from this (K-12) so you know what you have coming all the way through. I have known coaches to have their High School Players coach the younger teams to help them develop as role models/players.

I think there are also coach where you "FIT" success that can be pointed to. That being said not everyone can win with someone else's talent and vise/versa. Great examples of this that get it done are Thompson at Wayne, Pettitt at Monroe, McNamme at Pikeville, Davis at Desales, Louisville Central, Gay at Adair, Smith at Boyle, Perry at Garrard. Other Examples that Scheme or Systems fit there players Pulaski - Coach Hines has built several programs around a system GREAT COACH, Coach Perry at Lexington Catholic has built his program around a scheme. Lastly, Coach Dixon at Hazard and Coach Elam at Pineville probably outwork most coaches with very little help because of school size. The problem is if you want to be a Head Coach find a school were your personality, ego, and their expectations/traditions can blend if not you will be looking about every two years. Just a thought.

And I don't think you realize that not all coaches have control of k-12 football. They don't often have control of the youth program. Many don't have control of the MS program. You have to be 21 to coach MS. HS players have enough going on that coaching youth isnt much of an option. Depending on how the youth is set up and the MS and when games. Then you add in offseason and in season. Then throw in frosh, JV, varsity. How much do you guys think a varsity coach makes? You guys realize how many guys lose a job after just a few years? We have threads like this and how is a guy suppose to be there long enough to see those youth kids make it to the HS. I know HS kids that went through 4 years with 3 different HCs. How does a school expect to win.

It wouldn't surprise me if Estill County came open. I think that since Trevor graduated last year that Coach Jones will be a year to year kinda thing.

None for the first four years, but I imagine after that they win a title roughly every other year. :thumb:

Beatty is a heck of a coach but some places just aren't going to ever be perennial winners, you just have to ride the waves when their high and try to schedule to prevent the huge crash when those waves start to break.

I know, but I couldn't help having some fun. I do think he'd improve the team considerably, but he'd probably only get one title in his whole career.

I've always said the best coaches are who get wins in an improbable place, either in high school or college. Everybody talks about college coaches being great recruiters at places like Alabama and Ohio State. I'll take the guy who gets good players to go to a MAC school.

Same goes for high school. If you're winning games in a small town with kids who might, MIGHT, play on an NAIA or small school level, I really respect that. That's not to say that the coaches at Trinity and other powerhouses aren't good or great coaches, because they are. But, I want to see the coach who is laboring over a way to get his woefully slow WR in space, and who realizes that if he can't out scheme the next team on Friday, they'll lose.

There is such a beauty, if you want to look at it that way, in seeing a coach get so much more out of his players, because he spent so much time planning, scheming and prepping.

I'm not going to get into a debate with anyone on here about wether a high school coach deserves to be fired solely based off wins and losses. My opinion on the matter is that is does matter to a extent but it really is determined a lot on where your coaching. In my experiences I'm pretty familiar with two different programs. Henderson county and Webster County, and those 2 schools have completely different philosophies. Webster county isn't a football school nor are they probably ever going to be. I believe In the past 8 seasons they've have 5 different head coaches. At a school like that so long as you want to be there, your not having any scandals going on within the team, your win loss records doesn't matter much. Their just going to be thankful they have a coach that wants to be there. On the other end of the spectrum is Henderson County. They expect to win ball games. Yes they expect you to teach life lessons and all that other good stuff but come Friday night your expected to win. A place like Henderson if you don't win regularly your prone to not getting your contract renewed. As far as someone being on a hot seat I think it's fair to say Tony Lewis at Henderson's seat is a little warm. Is it likely something happens after this season I doubt it, but when he was hired their was some controversy within the community about him getting the job over Josh Boston (current Union county head coach) at the time Boston had been the top assistant for something like 5 years and had the backing of the players. Everyone assumed if he didn't get the job it was only going to be because a sure fire candidate applied that couldn't be passed on. And Tony Lewis was that guy. A state championship at Reitz in Evansville and a unbelievable winning record there, he came in and had very high expectations placed on him. And thus far I believe it's fair to say him or the teams he's coached here haven't quite lived up to the hype. I know talent fluctuates over time, but when previous head coaches have been successful and you haven't it does look bad on you regardless of what the talent is. In the Duffer Duffy era Henderson Co. went 31-7. In the Clay Clevenger era they went 44-27 (with 9 of those losses in the first season which is hard for me to count because he took the job right before the season started), and so far Lewis is 18-16.
