Why do the public schools in NKY get along with their private school neighbors...

Featured Replies

better than schools in Lexington and Louisville?

Or don't they and it just seems that way?

Good question, some of the public schools in the area have been sucessful against the parochial schools in the area ie. Highlands, Bwood. I guess if they pounded every public school we'd hear more outcry. NKY is also heavily populated with Catholics, getting ready to hit the anual Festival trail soon.

I suspect it's true for two reasons ...

1. Not all the power is concentrated in two giant schools (on the boys' side of things) like it is in Louisville.

2. Don't the Catholic schools in northern Kentucky have districts, so to speak, where kids from certain parishes are steered to particular schools?

I'm guessing that it is because in the past, the private schools were often dependent on the nearby public schools for their facilities. Holy Cross-Holmes, NewCath-Newport, and CovCath-Dixie(??). In that time, the schools developed relationships with each other through the athletic departments, not to mention that the kids also developed relationships. Yeah, you wanted to kick their butts on the field, but it wasn't personal, just competiton.

Good info guys. :thumb:

I don't know the history of education in NKY but one thing I observe from a distance is that NKY has such a wide variety and cross section of school sizes in both public & catholic (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A). This is vastly different than Louisville where its overwhelming 4A and you have so many competing against each other in every single endeavor - there is no letup. I don't know if NKY evolved this way simply b/c of the size & makeup of the various cities, etc but it's a really nice mix and I believe it's one of the prime factors in NKY football being so good across the board.

I am curious about Ryle's formation. They were coming online (so to speak) about the time we (Ashland) were being moved to 3A and matched up with the mountains. I heard comments that Ryle would cut into Boone and would become the new power. Boone may have dropped but Ryle has never peaked that I recall?? I'm not even aware of their class size history. Any thoughts on that point and/or if their are any new schools or consolidations forcasted due to growth or population changes??

Thanx, Woody Jr

Boone Co will have a 4th "4A sized" school in the near future. IMO a massive single county campus would change the landscape of big school KY football...

Maybe its simply because we're solid folks and realize its just high school sports.

If Highlands and CCH were in 4A you would have a different story.

Except Highlands is not a private school.

Except Highlands is not a private school.
Even more to the point then, if CCH were in 4A and dominated the area the situation would be more like it is in Louisville. The point being the regions aren't similar, and if they were I'd expect the relationships to be rockier.

I think it is as simple of an answer that up here, neither the public schools or the private schools have dominated one another in athletics. While Highlands has had CovCath's number recently in football from a wins and losses perspective, the games have been quite competitive to put it mildly. Highlands and CovCath have been competitive in basketball. In baseball, Highlands has fallen behind, but the people at Highlands don't blame anyone at CovCath for that or anyone else for that matter except the people at Highlands that let it happen. It has been and will continue to be addressed. In Class A, NewCath has been competitive with Beechwood the last several years in all sports and of course won the football state championship this year.

My guess is that if CovCath and NewCath won the football state championship title with the frequency that X and T have, things would not be a cozy as it is. I don't expect that to happen, because I think the people at Highlands and Beechwood will always respond to the challenges presented to them by the CovCath's and NewCath's. I look for the balance to continue between the privates and publics in N. KY and love and peace to continue to be spread across this area of the state. Can I have a kumbaya anyone?

Great point leatherneck. No one complained when Beechwood won all their state titles. NCC kept plugging away and finally won one in 1A.

Because all of the Privates are either 3A or lower...and they are not the supreme top dogs in those Classes...if we were up there, I bet NKY 4A would still not like us much.

LN, any ideas on why theres no kumbaya in Louisville?

While I may have phrased it a bit differently I have no doubt that if the private schools in Louisville weren't as successful as they are the level of animosity would be considerably less.
