14 Year Old arrested for making a clock

Featured Replies

Does anyone really think he was not trying to make it look like a bomb?

If you think he was knew what it was going to look like, then you shouldn't have any issue with him getting arrested or suspended because a kid taking a fake gun or hand grenade to school would be (rightly so) suspended.

If you think he really didn't know what it would look like then you will think everything that happened to him was wrong.

So look at it closely and ask yourself did he know what this was going to look like...or is this kid just not smart enough to know that it looked like a bomb.

It makes me sad how quickly folks blame "the school" without knowing any of the detailed information.

If that picture of the dismantled clock is accurate, it would fall under the "look alike" part of the discipline code of many schools.

If the kid was also uncooperative when asked questions, that would definitely be reason for concern.

Bringing a look-alike would warrant a 3 day suspension in many discipline codes, even if the school knew the device was not a bomb. The same is true of pellet guns and air soft guns. at our school, pop tarts don't fall into that category.

It doesnt matter if a kid is Muslim, White, Black, or any other color/ethnicity.... The school administrators have to keep order in the school and do EVERYTHING they can to provide a safe environment. Until you are charged with keeping 700 or so kids safe from outside nut jobs and also safe from one another, be careful acting like you know what you would do. You don't.

He's a kid. You'll never convince me he knew the full gravity of what he was doing. Kids do stupid stuff until they are 25 years old. He's 14. Even if he wanted to prove a point he still had no idea of what he was doing. He is a kid. That fact should never be lost. There's a reason kids can kill someone at 13 years old and be released to society at 18 years old. Kids.

Believing his ethnicity didn't have anything to do with it being blown out of proportion is every bit as naive as this kid is.

I agree he may not have known or understood the gravity of the situation.

Do you think he knew that others would think it would look like a bomb? Do you think he built it intentionally in a way to "resemble" a bomb?

If you don't think he knew it looked like or that others could think it looked like a bomb, that's cool. I just don't think he's dumb enough to not know others may be concerned about it when he showed it to them.

I never said anything about his ethnicity either way.

His ethnicity is part of the problem.

I don't know what real bombs look like. The bombs on TV look like that though. TV isn't real life though. I would like to think that the most naive person could look at his contraption and not see explosives attached to it and let common sense rule the day. And then he has another teacher he showed his contraption to first who told him to put it up because people would overreact.

Again, you'll never convince me the kid knew the whole gravity of his situation. Kids have no clue. None of them.

Do you think he meant for it to look like a bomb or not?

No. I don't think he did. I think he was showing off and it backfired.

Question, was the kid arrested or was he detained?

No. I don't think he did. I think he was showing off and it backfired.

If that's true then this was all overblown.

If he was trying to shock people with something that he knew good and well what it would be perceived as then he probably should have been suspended.

I guess we'll never know if he's really that naive or not. In the end this has and will turn out great for this kid.

Agreed.

Having finally read through all this and seeing some interviews on tv, I think the kid was trying to get some attention and he did. Maybe not the kind he was looking for. Mark Cuban said he talked to the kid and encouraged him to keep tinkering, etc. But Cuban said he got a weird feeling talking to the kid cause every time he would ask him even a simple question an adult would tell the kid what to say then he would say it. That does sound weird. I'm guessing they're trying to preserve the lawsuit that will no doubt be filed momentarily and don't want the kid to inadvertently say something that might reflect poorly. I suspect that's why all the family members are smiling so broadly when they were on tv.

Regarding Obama taking up for the kid, I don't mind it so much but he left out thanking the teacher for being diligent and calling in help when he/she wasn't sure what the item was.

Now teachers will be less likely to question something they don't understand for fear of being painted an idiot, or as the left prefers to do, a racist. I doubt many English teachers can identify all the components of a bomb and if you hear something beeping in your classroom and it doesn't really look like a clock, what are you gonna do?

Obama put all teachers in a no win situation by not backing them up and just taking the kid's side.

He was punished. He was arrested, handcuffed and hauled off like a criminal for making a clock that resembled a bomb that we see on TV. Oh, and he was suspended from school for 3 days and has had to transfer schools as well. I'm thinking he was punished but we all have different definitions of punishment.

Was he arrested, or just temporarily detained? Is he facing any charges? And did he have to transfer schools, or was that by choice?

I'm assuming he was arrested based on that picture of him in handcuffs floating around the Internet. Not sure if he was charged with anything though.

An arrest includes charging someone with a crime.

If he wasn't charged, he wasn't arrested.

Folks are handcuffed all the time but not arrested. It is often done when you have a "suspect" and checks are run or whatever protocol is being followed until an answer is found.
