September 16, 201511 yr His teachers claimed it looked like a bomb. He claimed repeatedly it was just a clock. He was arrested and taken from school in handcuffs and suspended for 3 days. #dontmesswithTexas Irving 9th-grader arrested after taking homemade clock to school: 'So you tried to make a bomb?' | Dallas Morning News
September 16, 201511 yr Author If it was Eddie Moore would the school have reacted the same way? I would hope that they would but I doubt it.
September 16, 201511 yr I guess the school is rather between rock and a hard place here. However, I blame the fringe element that uses kids like this for its evil purposes for the paranoia.
September 16, 201511 yr In this day and age if a kid brings something to class that looks suspicious, the school HAS to be cautious. The kid says it looks like a bomb so they should just take his word for it?? What if it was a bomb and they took his word that it was a clock and he set it off and killed a bunch of kids? The same people complaining that the school officials were wrong would be saying, "how in the world did the officials take a kid's word for it that it was a clock when it was a bomb". Keep in mind that the school officials' number one job is to insure the safety of the students. It is easy to Monday morning QB this situation IMO...
September 16, 201511 yr Well they certainly have given this intelligent young man a reason to be anti government.
September 16, 201511 yr All they had to do was ask his engineering teacher, then look that he was in robotic club in junior high. Be cautious on both sides. But answering Clyde's question, no, if his last name was a common European type name this wouldn't have happened.

September 16, 201511 yr This is Texas we are talking about here. He needs to be happy they didn't give him the chair...
September 16, 201511 yr The only part of this story I do not like is the handcuffs. Not necessary. I don't think the school officials overreacted though; better to err on the side of caution. Could you imagine if a wing of the school blew up and then some teachers say, "Well he said it was just a clock." The media would have a field day with that. This is unfortunate, but sadly just another sign of the times.

This is unfortunate, but sadly just another sign of the times. You don't have a problem with this part? The teacher kept the clock. When the principal and a police officer pulled Ahmed out of sixth period, he suspected he wouldn’t get it back. They led Ahmed into a room where four other police officers waited. He said an officer he’d never seen before leaned back in his chair and remarked: “Yup. That’s who I thought it was.”
September 16, 201511 yr ^ if they thought it was a bomb, why not evacuate the school? And the teacher kept the clock?
September 16, 201511 yr You don't have a problem with this part? If the officer really said that then yes, I have a problem with that also. But that is the boy's version of what happened. This whole story lacks depth. Had the boy been told before to not conceal electronics? Was there ever an issue with any other kids in this regard? Had this boy been targeted unfairly before? I cannot imagine there is a parent out there that has a kid in school that would not hope the school errs on the side of caution. Gun, bomb, drugs, doesn't matter. Black, white, Muslim, Jewish, doesn't matter.

Black, white, Muslim, Jewish, doesn't matter. Maybe it lacks "depth" because it was shallow? That this is all there is to it? And if they thought it was a bomb, the teacher keeping the clock and the school not being evacuated is not erring on the side of caution. Also, who took the photo of a minor in handcuffs?
