The shame is that there are some things about Trump that I like...saying what he means is one of them. But attacking a genuine war hero is crossing a big line.

That's pretty much my take. I like Trump's willingness to say anything, political correctness be damned. I think that style is both rare and refreshing. It's highly doubtful I'd vote for him, but I like the style that he brings to the table.

But what he said here was nonsense and just plain stupid.

Trump has an almost predictable way of responding to people he disagrees with. He basically takes whatever someone is known for and says they are bad at it.

Take the example with the Modern Family writer in the other thread.

"Just tried watching Modern Family - written by a moron, really boring. Writer has the mind of a very dumb and backward child."

Apparently he had a tiff with "atheist Penn Jillette."

"I hear @pennjillette show on Broadway is terrible. Not surprised, boring guy (Penn). Without The Apprentice, show would have died long ago."

On Jon Hunstman, a well-regarded diplomat and ambassador to China:

"A total lightweight: @jonHuntsman continues to give the worst responses on China in the debates. I can see why @BarackObama appointed him China Amb."

Same with Clinton (though not an unpopular opinion here):

She was Secretary of State? "The Worst Secretary of State in the History of the United States."

To a journalist during an interview:

"You're a very naive person" for bringing up polls and "you don't know what you're talking about."

Same thing with McCain here. He's not a war hero, he just got captured.

I'm hard pressed to believe he really thinks all of these things (maybe he does?), but it seems more likely he's playing an almost cartoonish character. It works when you agree with him. "Yea, Hillary is the worst!" It doesn't when you don't. "McCain not a hero? What?!"

It seems like there's more to the story than just a "straight shooter."

I'm inclined to agree.

The line between refreshing and ill-advised is really blurry.

This poll has Trump up 3% over Bush :

2016 National Republican Primary - Polls - HuffPost Pollster

Trump's mouth isn't going to lose him the nomination, its going to win him the nomination! Like him or not, his candor is refreshing considering the relentless waves of meaningless hyperbole we are supposed consume in order to make voting decisions.

I agree with Trump's comments on immigration, and if the truth offends you, so be it.

Trump may be leading, but as candidates drop out, he will not pick up much of their support. His percentage won't change a whole lot from where it is now whereas someone like Bush for example, may double over time. Trump is just entertainment.

Frankly, I was initially very interested in Trump because of some of the things he said. Now, I am not even "entertained" by what he is saying. What is the old saying..."don't go away mad Donald...just go away"...

If Trump continues his immigration rant, he will get a lot of support in SW US. Furthermore, I believe Trump has the potential to tap into the darker side of the conservative psyche by saying things a lot of politicians just won't. He may get the nomination, but he could get enough support to determine who does.

I mean this with NO disrespect at all to any servicemen, past ot present.

But, if you take away that Trump said this on his horrible style, there is an interesting concept to explore. Why do people assign more "glory" to people who suffer for their country, or even religion, than those who do the same tasks, same actions, yet come out on the other side without having suffered? Now, I'm qualifying this by saying that I believe all who have served in any capacity that put them in a position of having to make life and death decisions definitely will not depart that duty without some sort of sacrifice of themselves even without being injured.

Excellent post. Whether he is being truthful or not, this is what Trump said he was trying to convey.

Why do we assign more respect to McCain? Because the dude was locked in a tiger cage and tortured for two weeks until the VC brass found out his dad was an admiral, when they threw him into solitary confinement for the next two years. He declined an offer of early release (again because of who his father was) because he did not want to be released until the soldiers taken prisoner before him were released. He received daily beatings so they could try to force him to read anti-American propaganda statements. When he finally broke and read one, he refused to do so again so they beat him even harder. He ultimately spent five years as a prisoner and suffered permanent injury from it.

That guy suffered more for the flag patch on his arm than most of the rest of us could possibly imagine. And yet in spite of that suffering (perhaps even because of it) he stayed with the Navy until 1981 and then entered a career in public service. What made that guy want to continue to serve his country after all he'd already given it? No clue... but I believe it's worthy of a tremendous amount of respect.

All military service is worthy of respect. Not all military service is equal.

I thought this was intriguing. As anyone who follows my posts knows, I'm certainly no libertarian, but this was a fascinating look at Trump's political leanings from a libertarian site I've read a few times.

A very interesting read. It's frightening to me to think of Trump as the leader of our country.

It's frightening me to me that we keep electing the same people who lie, cheat, and steal to and from the American public. We are sheep.

Very true. Of course, there's nothing about Trump that indicates he won't do those things as well.

When's the 1st debate, should be a fun watch.
