Why do we assign more respect to McCain? Because the dude was locked in a tiger cage and tortured for two weeks until the VC brass found out his dad was an admiral, when they threw him into solitary confinement for the next two years. He declined an offer of early release (again because of who his father was) because he did not want to be released until the soldiers taken prisoner before him were released. He received daily beatings so they could try to force him to read anti-American propaganda statements. When he finally broke and read one, he refused to do so again so they beat him even harder. He ultimately spent five years as a prisoner and suffered permanent injury from it.

 

That guy suffered more for the flag patch on his arm than most of the rest of us could possibly imagine. And yet in spite of that suffering (perhaps even because of it) he stayed with the Navy until 1981 and then entered a career in public service. What made that guy want to continue to serve his country after all he'd already given it? No clue... but I believe it's worthy of a tremendous amount of respect.

 

All military service is worthy of respect. Not all military service is equal.

 

Getslow, I absolutely feel McCain is a hero. I guess my reservations in assigning him more respect than Joe-Doe Soldier is that MANY of our soldiers have/and are suffering. There's a man that lives nearby (as in within a few miles) and he was in Kuwait during Desert Storm. I don't know the particulars because he won't talk about it. But he wasn't wounded. He wasn't captured. But he suffers every single day because of the things he saw, and the things he was commanded to do. No one will ever laud him as a hero, though. And I think what he suffers is just as horrible as any soldier who suffered physically.

 

Vietnam was a horrific military action. There's not one soldier who went there without life altering affects, more than we should have asked of any of our citizens. They were all treated horribly upon return for decades.

 

I get what you're saying about all service being equal. But I don't think one should assign the word "hero" to only a select few. We'll probably have to agree to disagree. But I grew up with a lot of Vietnam Vets in my life, and the man I mentioned earlier from Desert Storm is someone I've known for 25 years. I don't think one can say someone suffered more than any of them. And now, we see the effects of service in Iraq and Afghanistan taking it's toll on the men and women of our modern day service. Some can't even function, despite not having suffered physical injuries. To me, there is no one greater or lesser of a hero.

Anybody who willingly offers to give their life so that I may be free and safe is a hero to me. Police and fire officials, the guy you know, McCain, and every active serviceman/woman or retired veteran of the United States Armed Forces.

Is Trump's rise in the polls a media driven creation?

 

Even before his imbecilic comments about Sen. John McCain this weekend, which came too recently to be included in this data, Trump was receiving far more media attention than any other Republican. Based on Google News, 46 percent of the media coverage of the GOP campaign over the past month was directed toward Trump, more than for Jeb Bush (13 percent), Chris Christie (9 percent), Scott Walker (8 percent), Bobby Jindal (6 percent), Ted Cruz (4 percent) and Marco Rubio (4 percent) combined.

Trump is a media event waiting to happen. That is why he gets so much media attention. I want to see him make a racially charged statement and see how the polls react.

A thought just occurred to me. Remember when the GOP used an organized smear campaign to destroy a political candidate by degrading his service? Some how, the GOP moral outrage was not there when John Kerry was the victim of "Swift Boating". If Trump uses this to point out the hypocrisy of his rivals, look out!

Why do people assign more "glory" to people who suffer for their country, or even religion, than those who do the same tasks, same actions, yet come out on the other side without having suffered?

 

All military service is worthy of respect. Not all military service is equal.

 

For me, it's because he paid a price greater than I had to and greater than most can ever understand. All else being equal, military service involves a certain amount of sacrifice for all, voluntarily typically. For those that are injured, maimed, captured or killed, they pay an ultimate sacrifice that sometimes never ends, and that's more than was asked of me.

 

We assign the respect due the effort and condemn those that try to take more than they earned. I don't like John McCain as a politician, although I voted for him. As a human being and a serviceman, he hits top 3 in my currently still alive list, with my Dad being #1 .

To follow up on the last: I don't like Trump. I think he's an arrogant, grandstanding megalomaniac with no business in politics, he's dangerous in that arena.

 

I'm not happy about his comments because they were unnecessary, and quite honestly Mr. Trump hasn't earned the right to question a soldier, sailor or airman, definitely not a POW.

 

I support his right to say what he wants....John McCain fought to protect his right to say it.

I think that's were we get it wrong....all are heroes, only some are recognized publicly, and most don't want that. Just say thank you and move along, it tends to work best that way.

One thing Trump does have going in his favor is that he can call out everyone but they can't come back and attack him on issues because he doesn't have a voting record. These folks have egos, it has to grate them that he is getting all the attention.
