June 15, 201511 yr Very true. Since it's the school's function and they set the parameters, wouldn't they be the ones to decide that? No. You can't legislate enthusiasm. Cheering has been associated with graduation ceremonies for a long time. The smarter approach would have been to (a) respectfully ask the audience to keep vocal displays of support brief and (b) add 3 or 4 seconds between announcing names. This superintendent may be in the wrong line of work.

June 15, 201511 yr I think maybe some are taking the rules too far. I'm not about "ruining" anyone else's experience, just that during that 4 - 5 seconds if people want to make some noise, and it doesn't continue for several minutes....then whatever. Some are making this sound like parents are bringing air horns and cymbals to the ceremony and are creating a ruckuss for the duration....it's not like that. 123 posts into this and I'm glad to see that we have differing opinions, just goes to show how we all view these little events, in our own special way

They don't announce the next name until the cheering stops.

June 16, 201511 yr Or it's the perpetuation of the school system attempting to exert control over something in the real world that they have no ability to.... Schools, as an institution, need to get over themselves and realize that they are not the reason for the celebration. I think we could also say that some people need to realize that not everything is about them. Be proud of your kid and love them dearly. But it the people in charge make a request, then honor their request. I have been to good ceremonies where everything went smoothly and bad ceremonies where lighting, sound, and air conditioning malfunctioned. Who gets blamed? The principal. Why? Because she was in charge. If she was in charge than how come people didn't honor her request.
June 16, 201511 yr If challenging a rule through proper channels is being a blind sheep in your estimation, you have a lot to learn. As to how you sleep at night, I doubt the school system really cares, nor do I. This brings up an interesting question. If you did not know of the policy prior to arriving, how are you to "challenge the rule through proper channels"? Should you seek out the superintendent ahead of the ceremony? Obviously waiting until the next school board meeting doesn't work. Yeah, you may be able to challenge/change the policy for upcoming years...but, if your one and only son or daughter graduates THIS year...does it really matter?
