Why did Cooper and Conner voluntarily request to play in 6A?

Featured Replies

As I had previously stated, one clear reasoning for Cooper making the move to

6A was because of future growth. The article below indicates that the new middle school is on it's way.

Moving up because your school's enrollment will increase in the future does not make sense. I do not disagree with the decision to play 6a, I just have zero belief that the reason was because of future growth.

Again, I don't think the move has anything to do with competition. I think it has everything to do with location period.

When Cooper was built in 2008, the reason they didn't play in the class they would have been assigned to is because most of the teams in their district would have been long road trips. So what they did was played in the 6A class to start off. Do you or anyone else think they wanted to play 6A in the first years of existence because of the competition? Heck no, they knew they would take their lumps. They knew they had no prayer of even competing in the majority of the games. They did it because of location and finances.

It was a lot easier playing teams in the area instead of traveling 2-3 hours a week to get to games just to play district games. In 2008 I believe Cooper's male enrollment would have been that of a 3A school (Cooper only had 45 male seniors enrolled in the school and a total male enrollment of 408 in 2009). They didn't play in 3A simply because it would have been too expensive and inconvenient to have to travel that far every away game. So instead of playing 3A they played 6A because NKY had all those 6A teams and was much more convenient and financially responsible.

Cooper didn't have money when they first opened. I still remember my daughter who was cheering telling us the cheerleaders didn't even have practice mats to practice on. They didn't have a lot of things. Shoot they had freshmen players filling out the Varsity roster because they didn't have enough players to even field a team.

So I'm sorry if I take offense to anyone who says or even hints to the idea that Cooper moved up to 6A because they are avoiding teams in other classes such as Highlands or CCH. If anything Cooper has done anything but avoid or hide from anyone. They've taken challenges they knew they were the underdogs in and faced them head on. Cooper has never nor will ever duck anyone and choose the easy path when it comes to Varsity Football.

Anyone who suggests Cooper moved to 6A because it is easier than if they stayed in 5A, simply look at their history. When they play up 3 classes when they first became a school instead of playing in a class they had the size for and would have been much easier, well that explains a lot about the character of that team and the character of that coach.

The decision to play 6a, when the school opened , was made prior to hiring a coach and was known to those who interviewed for the HC position.

The decision to play 6a now, was the school's decision.

I didnt say it wasn't made before. What I posted was the reason they played 6A when they opened.

Ru keeping folks posting in the off-season, nice job.

I posted on this when the alignments were announced and expected a lot of feedback then, as I said the scramble to avoid HHS and CCH was on. Pretty sure I mentioned Scott moving down to 4A as part of the equation, but it was a while ago.

Move has everything to do with avoiding being in a district with HHS and CCH, like avoiding the plague. Everything else is spin city and diverting.

Several on here have nailed how much better it is to go lose to Trinity in the finals once every 10 years, than to play HHS and CCH in the playoffs ever year. 6A playoff format gives you that chance, and it built a lot of momentum for Simon, Ryle, and Dixie during their runs. And, they played it for all it was worth.

Cooper fans in this thread are doing the same thing, beating their chests about going to a state final, and a final four in 5A. Not a thing wrong with that, except I'm trying to find which year they beat either CCH or HHS in the 5A playoffs. Were CCH and HHS in the same class as Cooper at the time? If not, I'm not sure how what they did in 5A matters regarding this thread.

Nobody in NKY wants to be in the same district as CCH and HHS. To ever advance very far in the playoffs you not only have to be better than one of them, but both of them in the same year. Bravado aside, who really wants to roll the dice with that year in and year out?

As for logistics, here's a simple answer, reduce the number of classes. That will take care of it quickly.

A solid point. The litmus test for it is whether or not Dixie Heights had to move down or chose to. I can't recall which is the case.

I've yet to understand why any schools were allowed to move up or down. Play your class as you so qualify.

I'm not familiar with the process, how do schools know ahead of time what other schools are going to do? Is there some type of notification that gets sent out?

Also, an off-topic question, but I was looking at the district layout when considering Sandman's statement. Why does 6A district 2 only have three schools when districts 3 and 4 have five apiece? PRP is located in the Southwestern part of Louisville and it would not be a stretch to include it. The maximum travel distance if you added PRP would be 50 mins (PRP to Central Hardin) which is not significantly different from the current longest trip (40 mins from Meade County to Central Hardin).

It just seems odd to me.

They don't which makes Sandmans post pretty silly. He continues to leave out the fact that if the schools

were running from HHS (and CCH which I don't understand why CCH is a reason, they haven't done a thing forever) due to the simple fact that these teams are playing Highlands. If they were running from them

then why would they be scheduling to play them this year etc?

Keep acting as if it's all

about Highlands of that makes you happy. It's pretty sad if

you ask me plus no one has produced any fact that the schools knew what HHS was doing ahead of time anyway. Maybe Highlands moved up because they heard Cooper was

moving up so they knew they wouldn't have them in their district. Pretty reasonable if you want to use that type of thinking in your reasoning.

To sandman, did CCH ever beat Cooper in the playoffs? Still. It sure where your idea that CCH is so special in your mind. You do understand that Cooper has only been around 7 years right? You also do understand in that time

frame CCH hasn't done anything in the playoffs right? I watched CCH play last year and thought that might be the year they finally give HHS a game but they got toasted twice and also schooled by a 1A team along the way. So unless you can provide the memo that everyone received stating HHS was moving up to 5A before anyone made their decision about where they would play then your reasoning holds no water.

"Haven't done anything in the playoffs" is a bit silly. Most years they've been beaten by Highlands in the Regionals- I'd wager to say just about any team not named Trinity would share the same fate.

"Gotten toasted twice" by Highlands? First meeting yes- toasted. Second meeting, not so much. Actually had a good shot to win it.

"Schooled by a 1A team"- yes, they shouldn't have been beat- but that tends to happen whe you lose your first string QB the third play of the gameand second team QB in the second half.

Oh yes- almost forgot- they also "toasted" the 6A runner up during the regular season.

Happy the Cooper and some other schools are stepping up to play Highlands during the regular season- though not nearly as meaningful as what it would mean during the playoffs.

Point was simple. To think Cooper is "running" from any school is silly.

If the teams had no knowledge of who was moving where, then his point is invalid.

If they did know, then he makes a reasonable case. There is a difference between playing a team in regular season and in the play-offs. A loss in the regular season is unfortunate, but only a loss in the play-offs prevents you from advancing.

So what was the point of Cooper and Conner moving to 5A? To avoid SK?

Dixie's enrollment placed them in 5A.
