If an alien civilization knows that we are here and makes it to us, they would have to be vastly intellectually superior to us. The farthest we have sent humans from our planet is the moon and that was only for a few days. Since an alien civilization would have to come from outside of our solar system, they would have technology far superior to ours. Whether or not they are hostile or friendly is a little more open ended.

Using rough math, the Universe is about 14 Billions years old, Earth has been around for about 4.5 Billion years, that gives many planets an 8 or 9 Billion year heard start on us.

 

Think of it this way, where will we be with technology in 10 years? 100 years? 1 Million years? 1 Billion years? 9 Billion years?

 

I think by just using mathematical numbers (billions of galaxies and trillions of stars) and the age of the universe that you've mentioned, over 14 billion years, I think it's fairly certain that intelligent life has evolved in the past, present, and will continue to do so in the future, in the universe. There's no way to definitely prove this though, so all that scientist can do is make educated assumptions. I guess that's where the mathematical calculations are a helpful aid.

 

My guess is there's been numerous incidents of life throughout the universe, and some may have evolved, thrived, and become extinct long ago, just like life on earth is doomed to do. Stars only last so long. Ours is about halfway through it's life cycle of 10 billion years. More intelligent life probably exist at this time but they are so far away from our planet that we may never know they exist, nor will they know we exist. There's too many light years distance to travel. Even in our Milky Way Galaxy, one of the smaller galaxies, the distance is 100,000 light years from one end to the other.

 

One thing I am skeptical about is the idea that we've been visited by aliens in ancient times, or present times for that matter. I've watched a little of the History Channel programs on these subjects and they tend to give mostly one sided stories about the subject matter without interviewing skeptics who doubt their findings. There's several websites that one can go to that details the history behind some of the ancient drawings that the ET programmers want to say is pictures of spacecrafts and aliens. These things are usually explained by researchers for what they actually are. Most are simply drawings of cultural events and religious ceremonies. That's just one example but there's others. Some of the alien researchers let their imaginations run wild. Most of the things they discuss can be logically explained if only they'd dig a little deeper in their research.

Correct on the distance across but calling the Milky Way small is a matter of perspective I suppose. While there are much much much bigger galaxies than the Milky Way, the Milky Way is still much larger than the majority of galaxies in the universe.

I agree all the UFO stuff is perfect cover for the US Government to conduct secret military operations on new technology. Additionally, I assume it makes the rest of the world wonder if we are reverse engineering advanced alien technology and that has to be a very scary thought for our enemies.
