Kyle Wiltjer article by Grantland

Featured Replies

Real good article.

For all of you UK fans bashing, he's not the same guy he used to be. And with that in mind, I hope UK plays Gonzaga in the tourney and he goes for 30 against your guys. Lord knows the motivation will be there.

Did Kentucky want him to leave? I know I didn't personally. And I think some of the jokes here were certainly valid concerns at the time. The article said he considered at one point red shirting because he knew he needed a year to work, and I certainly wish he had done it here.

He made a good decision.

Cal's comments at the time said he didn't have much of a future at UK.

I have already stated a few times that I think Gonzaga is overrated. However has a player ever won two National Championships while playing at two different schools?

Most Kentucky fans don't.

Exactly, why watch an inferior product :lol2:

You're absolutely right, he's not the same guy, but he still doesn't play a lick of defense.

He's been outstanding for Gonzaga, made the best decision for him and his future and dreams of playing professionally.

If UK were to happen to play Gonzaga, Cal would just stick WCS on him and that would be the end of that.

Wiltjer would maybe score 18 on his best night ever against the Cats....but he would also give up 45.

I recall that Bob Bender played as a reserve on the '76 IU team and then later played as a reserve on the '78 Duke squad that lost to UK.

That's the closest of any I can think of off the top of my head.

Looks like he's made nice progress since we saw him last.

I root for the kid, but of all the Zags games I've watched he hasn't improved that much if at all in my opinion. Obviously he hasn't stepped foot in a weight room. He'll get eaten alive in the NBA, if he gets any chance at all.

Now, that being said, I was a guy who thought the skinny Tayshaun Prince would get hammered in the NBA.

I am rooting for him. Kyle still looks like he hasn't hit puberty yet.

He had a career night tonight with 45 points.

I loved him and hope he continues to do well...I hated to see him go.

I think k they are better than most give them credit for.

I was bummed when he transferred but I understood why he did. I'm really glad to see that he's playing so well for them. Now, if we meet them in the tourney and he has a huge game cause UK to lose, I take it all back!

Wiltjer made very little improvement from his first to second year. He scored more points, but mainly it was due to an increased role. Everyone knew he could score some buckets in his crafty fashion, but his schtick could only take him so far. Even by his own admission he did not put in the requisite effort to succeed to the level of his potential. And Cal was probably right, he was not going to see minutes over Julius Randle, Poythress, KAT, or Trey Lyles. He made the right call in taking a year to better his game. I wish he had done it at UK, but understand why he chose the Zags.
