Did the Patriots Use Deflated Footballs in AFC Championship Game?

Featured Replies

That part is what I am hazy about. I get there is no proof they altered the footballs. And maybe they didn't. But it is still their responsibility to ensure they are in compliance. Kind of like when someone pleads ignorance, one can still be punished. Maybe not as severely.

Doling out punishment for this without evidence would be like the league suspending a dude for drugs without a failed drug test.

I'd imagine the worst thing they could do without proof is a fine, and even that would probably be pretty minimal IMO.

They'll simply implement a rule that all balls must be checked before each quarter, or between possessions, or at the kickoff immediately prior to the start of the game and halftime. Something absurd like that.

Or, they can do the logical thing and the league provides the balls. It's ridiculous that the league mandates uniform and shoe restrictions, but they allow teams to provide their own footballs.

Actually, it would be like someone failing a drug test for something that's not illegal in the US. You didn't see them take it, you don't know if someone "spiked" a drink or their food with it, all you know is they failed the test. A punishment is still getting handed down and the player will appeal.

Regardless, they still need to allow the QB's to pick their own balls to use during the game and those balls will need to be in the hands of the equipment staff and players prior to the start of the game. They are all using the Wilson NFL ball, it's not like they threw in a Nike composite ball.

That is a horrible analogy. :lol2:The balls were deflated. That is a fact. We are trying to prove if they had anything to do with it or if was some force of nature. Two separate things.

I think absent of proof, the fine or potentially draft pick loss may happen. I agree.

You're wrong there.

Regardless of if it doesn't make you able to throw farther, it doesn't discount the entire point of my post.

They mandate what footballs to use as well. They just let the teams prepare them within a specific set of guidelines. Would you prefer 2 minutes before kick off they start popping the tops on boxes of brand new balls? I'm sure all none of the QB's in the league would have an issue with that.

Works for me. At the very least, after the pre-game inspection, the balls should not leave the care of a league official.

IMO, the rule needs to be changed. Everyone uses one specific football. It has to be set to a min PSI with no maximum (not including the kicking balls, they would have only a max). The teams are allowed to prepare them anyway they want. They are checked 5 mins before game time and randomly checked throughout the game. The teams are responsible for making sure they never fall below the min PSI. If they do penalties are handed down. Maybe even in game penalties.

That's a good way to fix it. Have the teams provide the balls pre-game, and then after that they are in the hands of the NFL.

Don't you guys feel guilty now that they have video evidence of a locker room attendant, which ESPN called a " lone wolf", going rogue and sabotaging the balls.

Turns out that Coach B and QB B were on the up and up when they said they had no idea how the balls were deflated and were as surprised as everyone else.

Was it an elevator video?

I thought the video was of him going to the bathroom for 90 seconds. Or are you referencing something else?

About 6-7 seconds per ball, if that's when it was done.

At least there is a Fall Guy now!!!
