I have attended a lot of sporting events in my life, this game ranks towards the top for excitement.

The place was jammed pack, the game as exciting as can be, and Nick's shot was just the icing on the cake.

 

Instant classic.

Really thought that he was underrated.

I sure hope so. I believe that he had amazing potential.

I was in love with that Newport team the whole year, and the year before that as well because I thought that they were showing a lot of potential the same year the Dawgs won the Sweet 16. Of course not enough yet in the 2008/2009 season, and I was proud to see Holmes finally prevail after numerous years of trying.

 

I was pulling for Newport the whole 2009/2010 season, and in that final game, but I, and no one else could've ever predicted how that game was to turn out.

 

Complete shocker.

 

It was so satisfying.

 

They were a great team, but adding Demarko Foster to the bunch that season was key.

 

I knew if they played Holmes in the region they would have a real good chance of winning. They were starting to peak. Had a bad game against NCC in district finals. But they had a short memory of that game.

But yes, Ruthsatz half court shot game gets my vote.

Ryle's run at a region championship in 2002 was pretty amazing...Holmes (Englemon, B. Smith, Fischer), Dixie (Bramlages and Jones), then CovCath (they were favs I think... Lewin, Finke, Hiltz and Bain). All were close games, and Conner's gym was packed every night!

Luther was a great talent. He was highly underrated that entire season. He unfortunately didn't play anywhere after HS. Damarkco Foster did however. He played at Daytona State CC before transferring to U Tampa for his final 2 years where he was the starting PG and led them in scoring his senior year. He also had Tampa ranked nationally in the Division 2 Top 25 for the majority of his senior year. He just graduated with his degree.

It never gets old watching Brosky win the game! I grew up with Nick Brosky he was a great kid he died in a terrible car wreck coming back from Red River Gorge. He will never be forgotten!!!

Nick Brosky: promising life cut short by auto accident

 

Nick Brosky was 19 when he died Sunday night from injuries suffered in an auto accident earlier in the day in Fayette County.

 

Mr. Brosky, of Burlington, was a passenger in a car driven by Jennifer Gauspohl, of Crestview Hills, according to police. Ms. Gauspohl was one of seven people injured in the accident on Interstate 64 in Fayette County.

 

Mr. Brosky was a freshman at Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia and a star basketball player and 1996 graduate of Simon Kenton High School.

 

He was just beginning to explore his career options when he died at a Lexington hospital Sunday night.

 

Family members recall Mr. Brosky as being kind and considerate. But perhaps the best way to describe him is to recount some of the words he used to describe himself in a college paper he wrote May 30:

 

"My name is Nick Brosky. I am artistic and creative and tall and athletic. My mother is the most inspiring person in my life. She made certain that I have had whatever I needed and more than occasionally gave me what I wanted. She is the reason I didn't follow the wrong path in my early years.

 

"The purpose of religion in my life is to guide me in living a good life. Religion hasn't always been the biggest factor. But no matter how difficult life gets, you have to look no further than God . . .

 

"I was an overall good kid. I liked nature, in particular fishing and collecting snakes, playing sports and spending time with my brother Danny.

 

"Like any mischievous kid, I got into trouble with Mom and Pop but never with the law.

 

"I don't feel that I am clear of what my purpose in life is. What I am certain of is that I must contribute as possible while I'm here on Earth.

 

"My ultimate goal is to reach Heaven."

 

Mr. Brosky leaves his parents, Pat and Tony Brosky of Burlington; brothers, Tony Brosky Jr. of Waukesha, Wis., Danny Brosky of Ryland Heights and David Brosky of Burlington; a sister, Shannon Redmon of Columbia; and his grandmother, Alice Carnohan of Latonia.

 

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Cecilia Church, Independence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Burial will be in St. Cecilia Cemetery, Independence.

 

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky., 41042.

The Holmes/NCC regular season game from two years ago was a whale of a game. NCC controlled the game and then Bolden went crazy in the 4th quarter and hit a deep bomb to put Holmes up and then Pangallo drilled a pull-up jumper to send it to OT. NCC won in OT.

 

As for the 1979 Region Final, if I recall correctly, Holmes had a lead into the 4th quarter and Reynolds Flynn decided to start stalling. Highlands got some momentum and it carried to the end of the game.

 

1989 Region Semis at Holmes. Holy Cross beat Holmes something like 96-94 and that game may have taken a lot of starch out of Holy Cross, because they were upset the next night by the upstart Scott Eagles.

 

I do recall a game, from like 1979 and Holmes played Bryan Station with Mel Turpin and company and Bryan Station won something like 104-102.

 

Someone out there may recall some of these older games, but there has been a lot of good ones over the years.

 

This time of the year, makes me miss the old Famous Recipe Classic.

I'm seeing it again in my mind's eye, and I can still remember where I was sitting in that packed house.

 

The Bulldog faithful were dumbfounded and couldn't believe the outcome, and neither could most everyone else.

 

This thread is getting me worked up and a little misty I must admit.

9th Region final in '09 (the year Holmes won it all) ranks No. 1 on my list. Holmes 32, Boone 29. Never have seen a more intense game from start to finish.

I don't know how many region finals were won with a shot in the air at the horn but I do know it happened in 93 when Conner beat Holy Cross.

 

Crazy ending.

1991 finals between Holmes and Cross was a bloody battle.
