Just maybe the largest winning streak in the history of the Covington Latin Trojans.

 

This was hoops sensation Mitchell Blewitt's senior year.

 

Latin had a fairly decent team in the early 70's with Jeff Stowers.

 

Latin had a great player in the late 70's with Brian O'Connor.

 

Latin had a 20+ points a game scorer in the early 80's with famous MLB player, and recipient of the Rookie of the Year Award, and Atlanta Braves Hall of Famer, David Justice

 

And although I cannot say with complete certainty, I would venture to say that their 3 game winning streak in December of 2012 was likely their largest in the history of their basketball program.

 

For those who are not aware, Covington Latin students are two years younger than every school they play, therefore when they are Seniors they are Sophomore aged.

There was a huge charge call on Corey Pouncy, in transition that negated a basket late in that game. Jerry Marshall also had his full court desperation heave at horn hit the front of the rim. Holmes had beaten Cross by 32 and 27 earlier that year. Some felt the 1991 Holmes team was better than the 90 team that went to the finals. Cross was no slouch that year, they made it to the state semifinals.

 

There were some monster battles between Cross and Holmes in late 80's early 90's. In 1988, Holmes upset Cross in semis and then upset Campbell in their own gym to claim region.

 

The 1989 region semi had Cross winning 96-95.

 

We crushed HC that season and they knocked us out in the semis.

Speaking of that team, any ideas where they all are nowadays?

 

Vories coaches 8th grade hoops at HMS. Married high school sweetheart and lives in the Fort.

Dave Malone I believe is an attorney and lives in the Fort as well. His wife is a school teacher at Moyer.

I don't know how many region finals were won with a shot in the air at the horn but I do know it happened in 93 when Conner beat Holy Cross.

9th Region final in '09 (the year Holmes won it all) ranks No. 1 on my list. Holmes 32, Boone 29. Never have seen a more intense game from start to finish.

 

Quite the defensive battle with a lid on the basket.

A missed easy lay up by Boone late in the 4th quarter could've changed the course of history forever denying Holmes the chance to go on and win the Sweet 16.

You're absolutely correct. The missed layup came with 10 seconds left in game and Holmes up 30-29. Boone beat Holmes in regular season. Boone certainly was a top 10 team in state that year -- probably top 5.

I won't say the name of the player that missed the easy lay up, but I'd venture to say that missing that shot has haunted his dreams ever since. I can't help but feel sorry for him.

 

In his honor though he was a great asset to Boone's team that season, and mostly certainly one of the reasons the Rebels were in the position to be playing in the 9th Region Final in the first place.

The 09 Regional final was exciting at the end, but not the best by a long shot. It was a hard game to watch. Neither team shot well. Neither team made a 3ptr. Some good defense, but I wouldn't call it a great game. Just close.

I think its been mentioned but there was an NCC vs Dixie regional finals game I think 5 years ago that could be considered.

 

Three OT's, Geisler vs Hatton, and probably one of the first years tournament was at BOKC. Great atmosphere.

Each team played superb D that night. Which was what made it a great game. Using a baseball analogy, sometimes a 1-0 game is more exciting than a 7-6 game.

Silver Grove v. Bellevue (1985) because it was the only game in my varsity career that I scored double figures (17) :walk:

 

In all seriousness, I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but Highlands' late comeback in the 1986 9th region final against Walton was one heck of a game.

I love it when Latin gets credit. Its tough being a year or two younger than the guys in front of you. I heard Blewett is a red shirt at NKU. That sounds awesomd
