Did Trinity's Coach Beatty Really Say.............

Featured Replies

I could say a ton on the subject and on the posts in the thread. Some very good posts, others a bit misguided or hypocritical, IMO.

Instead, just to the bolded. Bear didn't get fired for punching a player, he retired from Alabama. Woody Hayes lost his job for punching a Clemson player.

Thanks for the correction. :thumb:

^ On New Year's Eve . . . I remember watching it live.....

I guess I am in the minority here. I can't really argue all the good points made why coaches/leaders/authority figures should take the high road. However, at what point should we be teaching our youth that enough is enough? For as long as BGP has been around and way before that there has been friction between Trinity (and X for balance) and some of the Jefferson County public schools. Granted none of us know the complete history (or complete recent history between Male and Trinity) but I personally do not have a problem with a Coach that stands up for his school, self, players, team, etc. and gives the other side a taste of their own medicine. Frankly, if my son played for Trinity I would be happy that Coach Beatty sprinkled a little sunshine after the game. Sometimes you have to stand up for yourself no matter the situation and what Coach B did is a life lesson for those players. It's okay to be a non-conformist.

I'm more or less on your side. I just would have been more subtle.

Agreed. We are the minority because I said if I lived in Lou both my sons would have played for Coach Beatty...T+B= Class Act:thumb:

Its just the haters and the crybabies that have a problem with the post game handshake...

Sounds also like these two coaches have a problem with the post game handshakes. I'm 15 years old and play for either T or M,(doesn't matter either way) what am I supposed to learn from the coaches actions? Most of us also learn at a very young age not to take crap off of anyone and defend yourself when needed. Bottom line, where is the line between "sportsmanlike" and "unsportsmanlike" drawn after a "heated" rivalry high school football game?

No problem standing up for yourself, but like I said before, they only grow a pair when they win. Why not stand up for yourself when you are being "dissed?"

Very good point. Anyone can be couragous when they are on top, but what about when you're not?

I guess I do have a little different take on this in that it should have been taken care of after the first game by Trinity Coaches as it happened. If Coach Wakefield was dancing on the T and blowing a whistle or whatever he did, and you see it, confront him there. Same as in the NFL when Lions Coach chased down Coach Harbaugh after he felt disrespected in the post game and got in his face. Or Cowboys physically blasting Terrell Owens for putting the ball down on the Cowboys logo after a late game TD. Plenty of examples of standing up for your school, organization, players, etc at all levels as they happen. You think Bobby Knight would have waited if another coach was dancing on the IU at the center of his home court? Coach Beatty or someone on the Trinity staff should have gone face to face with Coach Wakefield after the first game and had him knock it off and leave. End it there. I like the lesson that teaches the kids. Protect your own and don't take any crap. Waiting for revenge and then confronting him later and making a comment that involves the players also (turning in equipment) goes farther, to me, than just giving Coach Wakefield a taste of his own medicine after a very emotionally draining game. I like the post game handshake. Adults need to lead and show the kids the way to handle both success and failure.

I also don't have a problem with the comment made to the other coach...but I do have a problem with the fact that is was made in a manner that was loud enough for the players on the other team to hear. They just lost a game and that is one of the last things they should hear from the opposing coach. Again, if this story is correct and both coaches did what has been said that they did, I don't think there is anything wrong with the comment made. It just should have been between the coaches only.

I didn't have as much of a problem with the remark made by the coach (if it was made) than the people strongly defending him and claiming he would never say such a thing.

That is what makes the remarks if they were said seem even more childish to me. Fair or not, that is how i feel.

So what if he did. It's in the heat of the moment. I'm sure Male players or coaching staff were no angels. It's not good sportsmanship, I get that, but I have heard worst. And I'm sure you all here have too.

In a follow up discussion, confirmed by on field personnel, the Male side liner Wakefield-doubtful he is officially on staff-cursed Coach Beatty prior to the "turn in your 'stuff' on Monday" retort.

If that's the case, then good for coach Beatty. Like I said in my post #102, I'm sure Male SOME coaching staff and/ or players were no angels during the game.

The heat of the moment doesn't last 2 months.
