KHSAA's New 6 Quarter Rule

Featured Replies

My home state has had this rule for years. The week started on Friday and ended on Thursday. Statewide, Jv games were always on Monday and Freshman games were always Wednesday, and always played right after school, so as not to interfere with Soccer games which were usually played at night. At least that way, you always had everybody available for the varsity game, then you could bump freshman up for the JV game if a JV starter was forced to play varsity, and then whatever freshman were left would play in the freshman game. In those days, in my area, sophomores and freshman rarely played varsity, or even dressed for varsity and the ones that did, were mostly starters and wouldn't have been playing JV/freshman anyway, so the rule rarely came into play. So if the KHSAA plays it that way, it could work, although I could see smaller teams end up needing to cancel JV/Freshman games because kids had to play Friday night. But still, enforcement of the rule will be difficult.

This used to be a rule in West Virginia, but they dropped it about 2000. Impossible to enforce with small schools and will cripple them for freshman and JV.

Indiana at least used to do this in basketball when I was in school. Something about 6 quarters per night. Teammate and BGP member Far Beyond Driven was at the center of controversy one year when there was miscommunication/confusion between us and them over this rule when they said he couldn't play after halftime.

My take: The whole situation seemed kind of dumb from my standpoint, because it seems all that stuff would have been communicated ahead of time in the contract — they did have those in the mid-'80s, right?

I remember traveling accross the river to play basketball against a GCL school who enforced this rule against our visiting KY school.

If this new rule is implemented, it could change the score of several JV games in the Louisville Metro area . . . Juniors playing down and Sophs playing up!!!!

I do remember this............but vaguely. Rulings and suggestions like this usually come under the guise of "protecting" the kids. When in reality, it is being pushed by others with a completely different agenda. Usually, it comes from administrators and coaches from larger schools that want to keep the smaller schools down. I am speaking from a basketball standpoint only, as I have no experience in the football area.

Where is everybody seeing this new rule? Or is this just a rumor? Has KHSAA released anything about this?

Just when you think it can't get any worse with the khsaa. Is this going to be in effect for basketball? Is 1 play=to a qtr? A lot of gray area, but the khsaa handbook and the officials handbook have gray all over them.

Last my dealings with it were was with the committee. The committee made no final decision but more of a list of here is our thoughts and ideas on it.

I hadnt heard a thing about it again until September's Statewide AD's Meeting, so I am under the impression that they are getting final thoughts together to put it into effect next year. (I have had over a dozen AD's tell me that is the plan.)

Monday night JV is just plain stupid, The varsity loses a day of practice.( they almost always practice together) We are going to have kids traveling on school nights to God knows what hour? At least on Saturday there is no school! I guess you will play local or not at all. KHSAA would be better to leave this one alone.

If the new rule goes in and teams still play JV on Saturday, how will Cov Cath handle the rule? If CCH has a home game then they play JV on Monday. Let's say CCH plays at home and then the next week goes on the road. That means the JV will play on Monday and Saturday - 8 quarters in one week for every JV player not even including any possible varsity playing time.

The 6 quarter rule cannot co-exist with the running clock rule and would penalize small schools to the point that they could not schedule any JV games or Frosh/Soph games or just plain Frosh games. That would hurt kids development and force young kids to be played in Varsity only situations and sometimes be over-matched.

The KHSAA should consider that roster size at smaller schools (and roster sizes may even get smaller with the concussion worries or just correctly holding kids out of play with concussion symptoms) because there is no way a small school with a roster size under 30 could play a Varsity game and any other type of game that week. Especially if a running clock happens.

Let's use the recent Dayton/ Bellevue 62-0 game. Running clock at halftime but both schools have under 30 kids (actually under 25) so if either team subs in they would have to forego any other game that week. And if they do not sub in then 62-0 becomes what score?

Let's use NCC/ Brossart with a huge roster disparity. NCC puts running clock on Brossart in the first quarter and pulls all starters. NCC JV plays second and some of the third quarters. NCC Frosh play the end of the third and fourth quarters. But NCC Frosh had a game earlier that week versus Beechwood so they would all be not eligible to play in this running clock game.

That CovCath situation is a tricky one. Am I confused or does it not matter if the game is on Saturday or Monday? The day of the game doesn't do anything to a 6 quarters in 1 week rule. Each week has a Monday and a Friday. Each week has a Friday and a Saturday. It all comes down to the definition of a quarter. If a quarter is = to 1 play, then this rule is idiotic.

Imagine a kids reaction when a coach tells him, "I'm really sorry son, but since you were on punt team last night and we punted once in all 4 quarters, you can only play half of today's JV game." That sounds fair.

I think the rule is horrible and they need to revisit it.

It makes zero sense when your JV QB is the Varsity backup and then you can't play him in a varsity game if your starter gets hurt. Same as any position for that matter. We had 3 QB's go out in one game this year, what do you do then?

Stupid rule.

Keep it simple. A player can't play the same position he played in the previous varsity game and if the player played the majority of snaps with the starters then he shouldn't play in the JV game period. It's not rocket science and isn't too tough to make sense of this.
