KHSAA's New 6 Quarter Rule

Confusing my Birds. Did McCoy play JV QB aa a JR while playing varsity WR?

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think:

2009: Sr. Bardo was QB and got hurt, Soph. Towles took over as starter. I do not remember who was JV, but I am pretty sure it wasn't McCoy.

2010: Jr. Towles was QB, Soph. McCoy was JV QB

2011: Sr. Towles was QB, Jr. McCoy played WR, and Soph Houliston played JV QB

2012: Sr. McCoy played QB, Soph. QB Hodge played JV QB.

2013: Sr. Houliston played QB, Soph Hergott played JV QB.

2014: Sr. Hodge played QB, Jr. Hergott played JV QB

Ohio has and has had a 6 quarter rule for quite some time. No one logs JV quarters and coaches really didn't care about most of the kids who played sparingly getting extra work in on JV. I can tell you as a fact that this rule was broken a lot. It was more like the I wont tell on you if you don't tell on me between coaches. I started Varsity as a frosh on D, played 4 Qu. Then turned around and I was the JV Qb, played 4 more. ( and a little more d too). It was ok for frosh and sophs, a little more frowned upon when Juniors did it. So is the KHSAA going to make you file a JV game report. How else would they be able to police it? If coaches refuse to tell on each other then it is a mute issue anyway.

Don't like it. What if your JV QB is also your backup at the varsity level. You play a full JV game, then at the varsity game your starter gets hurt in the 1st quarter. What do you do?? This will especially hurt small schools, and reduce the reps your JV QB gets, as you want to have him available in case of a disaster. Tracking this will also be a nightmare.

Then you better have more than one backup QB.

Then you better have more than one backup QB.

Yeah that's the easy answer. Really! Hence why he said "hurt small schools". Follow along. How many "small schools" that you know of have multiple back up QB's. Not many I'm guessing.

Because explaing it is just exhausting

Is this only for football?

I believe so. Just wondering how that is calculated? Is one play = to 1 quarter? If you play 2 plays total but one is in the 1st qtr and 1 is in the 4th quarter is that 2 quarters?

That's the way it works in Ohio for Football and Basketball.

This sounds troublesome. Not just for small schools either. The freshman QB at Boyle was the JV QB also. He played 8 quarters every week when healthy.

Maybe that is why he wan't healthy!

We left it as football only when it was formated in committee, but I could see them carrying it to basketball on a per day rate. (most basketball teams have 2 Varsity games in a week.)

Soccer, too? Example----Your varsity goalie is sick/injured so JV goalie is playing both varsity and JV.

I guess it could. This started back a few years ago from the MS task force, When we discussed game limitations for MS sports, the discussion strayed a bit to the fact that HS Freshman could possibly play 12 quarters in a week. 4 - freshman, 4 - JV, 4 - Varsity.

That lead to a second committee and we discussed that and the issue of JV games the day after Varsity games, specifically the fact that like in NKY, JV games are less than 12 hours from the end of the Varsity game on Fridays, and does it allow enough rest time, hence no more Saturday JV games (unless Varsity does not play on Friday)

Again, that is where we left it at committee.

This rule will be very difficult to enforce. I would be interested to see the actual rule. If it is 1 play or even 5 plays equals 1 quarter, then the committee and KHSAA has done a disservice to kids. If a rotating receiver plays 2 plays per quarter in the varsity game, they would have only played 8 plays and be limited to 2 quarters of the JV game. Or a JV kid who plays on special teams would be limited to 2 quarters of the JV game.

I am okay with having a quarter limit, but the definition of a quarter needs to be a minimum of 10 plays. If a kid plays 10 plays in 1 quarter, that would be significant IMO.

Most committees have an agenda beyond the actual task of the committee. I can see where middle school advocates would love nothing more that to not allow JV games on Saturday mornings. Why? Because Middle school games cannot begin until the afternoon on Saturday's due to the inability to obtain officials. If there is no JV football on Saturday's, they could begin their games earlier. There is zero safety issue for a kid to stand on the sidelines or play 20 plays of a varsity game and then play a JV game less than 12 hours later.

The bolded was the exact problem, it wasn't the kids that didn't play on Friday that were the problem, it was the ones that did. As several pointed out, kid plays defense are varsity but is back up QB so he QB's the JV game, well thats 8 quarters in 24 hours. Simple solution, move the JV games to Mondays problem solved. Never made sense to me why the rest of the state does JV on Monday but NKY does them on Saturday and most of the teams are within a half hour of each other.

So we are going to punish the many because of the few? That sounds familiar.

The rule as listed on this site says 6 quarters a week. Playing Monday doesn't fix anything. What is the rule? Also, how is playing defense on Friday and offense on Saturday different than a kid playing every rep of offense, defense and special teams on a Friday night. I am not advocating kids playing 2 full games, but what is the difference?

Ridiculous rule. Wonder what parent cried to KHSAA about their son playing too much football. When I was younger back in the day, I Played Varsity on Friday and JV on Monday. Trust me that I enjoyed playing the Monday game a lot more than those Monday running practices. Kids get better the more they play the game.
