KHSAA's New 6 Quarter Rule

Featured Replies

If the new rule goes in and teams still play JV on Saturday, how will Cov Cath handle the rule? If CCH has a home game then they play JV on Monday. Let's say CCH plays at home and then the next week goes on the road. That means the JV will play on Monday and Saturday - 8 quarters in one week for every JV player not even including any possible varsity playing time.

I think it shold simply say the rules apply with the previous Varsity game. Not the week. So if CCH plays on Sat and JV plays on Monday, the rules should go back to the previous sat game, not the future varsity game.

Varsity should always be the priority. Doesn't make sense if they count a JV game before the varsity game is played.

Correct. And again, that's how it is handled in the state that I'm from (or at least used to be...I don't know if they still do it that way or not). The week started on Friday and ended on Thursday. All JV games were played on Monday and all Freshman games on Wednesday. That way you have everyone available for the Varsity game, and you can make adjustments at the JV/Freshman level if necessary.

Monday night JV is just plain stupid, The varsity loses a day of practice.( they almost always practice together) We are going to have kids traveling on school nights to God knows what hour? At least on Saturday there is no school! I guess you will play local or not at all. KHSAA would be better to leave this one alone.

Monday is a perfect day to play JV. It's typically a film/weightlifting/conditioning day, so it's not a huge deal if the JV guys miss. As far as travel, and being out late on school nights, every other sport plays during the week, and sometimes travels up to and over an hour to play some games. Besides, most JV/freshman programs only play local teams anyway.

What about sophomores that play special teams and play 4 quarters of JV?

Dumb rule! Small schools, teams with low numbers, injury plagued teams, etc will all suffer and for what gain? They are slowly removing what makes this the greatest sport in the world, all kinds of toughness! Might as well play anything else

Tdy, One can't teach ignorance, however one can ignore it...:thumb:

They need to keep this rule away from basketball!!!! There are a great many schools that use JV for their bench players. Our 6th man last season was a JV starter. It would cripple every small school forcing possibly the cancellation of the entire freshman schedule. JV teams would almost be entirely Fresh and soph. :isurrender:

Furthermore our football Varsity team was majority Fresh and Soph. :ohbrother: this rule would all but elimate any football JV or Fresh games for us (not that I know for sure we even had any fresh or jv games I can't lie i don't keep close tabs on the football program)

I read in another thread that the KHSAA will implement a 6-quarter rule next year.

At first blush I'm not a fan of such a rule.

How do they measure quarters?

Disadvantage for small schools?

We have the rule in Georgia and I like it tbh. Our 6 start on Friday so they can play 4 quarters of varsity and then you worry about the jv games later. And if they play to many quarters and have to forfeit you only lose the jv game.

Monday JV worked fine back when I played.

Monday JV (Starters Varsity watch scout film light practice)

Tuesday Defense Practice

Wed offense

Thurs walk through

Friday Game

Sat film and stretching - recovery

Did this rule go into effect?

Looks like it is now 8 quarters.

04/22/15-Final Changes Adopted for Football in Response to NFHS Task Force Recommendations | Kentucky High School Athletic Association

Each week is a Friday through Thursday period;

Participating in one play in a game at any level counts as one quarter;

Any playing time greater than 6 minutes counts as one quarter;

A playing time period of 6 minutes or less counts as one half quarter;

A player be limited to 4 quarters in any one day, 8 quarters in one week.

I like the rule at 8 quarters. It does not interfere with development of any players or impact a varsity game. It keeps coaches from over using freshman players. You have to make a decision on that stud freshman and choose between JV and freshman for him

From what I am hearing, many teams are bringing up their Middle School players to play freshman schedules, leaving several schools to not have ms teams this year.

Going to be interesting to see how this pans out and how this is all tracked and monitored, and what happens to the first violator of the rule.

8 quarters is completely fine. 6 quarters would be rough on any school AAA or under who isn't Mayfield.

I've seen teams who have 15-20 varsity players basically play their whole team for JV, just to get the extra experience. I've also seen plenty of teams who will bring out a varsity squad just in an attempt to win the game.

Limiting quarters is fine, but would be far too difficult to enforce for smaller schools if it was under 8. You'd have way more games where they kept the starters in during a running clock, just to be able to play JV on Monday. (And I've always been around Monday JV games, and I don't know of a single instance when kids are getting back at some ungodly hour. Seen plenty of times when they are finished with their game before varsity practice is done. Can't think of a single school that doesn't have a JV schedule under an hour from them.)

I don't like that 1 play in a quarter, equals a quarter. I mean, if you just have a space filler on kickoff, and he's essentially the safety/last man to beat, he's probably doing very little and probably won't even be touched really.

KHSAA did the right thing in expanding it to 8 quarters, although I'm unsure how many kids this will actually impact. If a kid is so talented, that he's playing varsity, he's probably not playing frosh or JV very much. And if a school is so small that everyone plays JV, they aren't playing frosh games. It's a rule that looks good, and does have the interest of the athlete at heart, but I doubt many Frosh/JV/Varsity rosters will have to change to accommodate 8 quarters of play.
