KHSAA's New 6 Quarter Rule

Featured Replies

I read in another thread that the KHSAA will implement a 6-quarter rule next year.

At first blush I'm not a fan of such a rule.

How do they measure quarters?

Disadvantage for small schools?

Need someone from Highlands to confirm my memory.

Carter New played WR as a JR. Did he also play JV QB that year?

What is the rule? Can't play more than 6 quarters in a week?

I believe so. Just wondering how that is calculated? Is one play = to 1 quarter? If you play 2 plays total but one is in the 1st qtr and 1 is in the 4th quarter is that 2 quarters?

That's a great question. If it's like you describe it's just like the baseball inning rule where 1 pitch=1 inning.

I hope that's not the case though as I don't think a player should be limited to 5 plays plus whatever happens in their 6th quarter (theoretically it could happen).

Don't like it. What if your JV QB is also your backup at the varsity level. You play a full JV game, then at the varsity game your starter gets hurt in the 1st quarter. What do you do?? This will especially hurt small schools, and reduce the reps your JV QB gets, as you want to have him available in case of a disaster. Tracking this will also be a nightmare.

I don't think so. When Carter New was a jr. I think Donovan McCoy was JV QB.

Exactly. John Hardin's Freshman QB is also the JV QB. He has had to start one varsity game. He also plays some defense and returns kickoffs on varsity. Don't like the rule at all.

If your week starts on Friday, then I would be more apt to accept it. Then you would only have to limit the JV time later in the 7 day period and everybody would be available on Friday night.

What if your Friday game gets postponed to Saturday, and then you have another game on Thursday?

I'd like to see the written version of this rule. Is it a proposal or is it an adopted rule change at this point?

This sounds troublesome. Not just for small schools either. The freshman QB at Boyle was the JV QB also. He played 8 quarters every week when healthy.

An hour ago I hadn't heard of this rule, now my head is swimming.

There are a TON of schools in this exact situation. Awful rule if true.

Confusing my Birds. Did McCoy play JV QB aa a JR while playing varsity WR?

So my JV kid that is on extra point and field goal on Friday night's can't play on PAT anymore? Terrible idea.
