I will definitely have to be at one of those. If anyone has a chance to beat HMS in the big school division it is Woodland.

I like both Gray and Campbell, but I don't think they are separated from any of about 10 other teams. I mean, Gray has lost to beechwood and holmes, and campbell has lost to gray and twenhofel. So, I think I agree with your original sentiment, Highlands is not the best eighth grade team by a wide margin. But I do think they could still win the region.

Let's just clarify the AAU age rule. The cutoff date is Aug 31st. So, to play U13 AAU, you cannot turn 14 before Aug 31, 2015. I don't have birth certificates, but I am pretty confident Mayer and Diskin are fine. Both played in a 12yr old baseball tournament in Cooperstown last Summer, and now AAU basketball is matching the baseball age cutoffs.

 

Its about time.....11 year olds playing against 13 year olds..............

Ok....since were talking hold backs....GRAY 8th grade has no holdbacks...NONE....How about the other teams you mention as being top teams...........How many holdbacks are out there? A bunch.

Highlands doesn't have any, and honestly I don't see that as that big a problem with nkmsaa teams. I don't know several of Holmes players, but virtually every other player, particularly the ones named on here as among the best (Houston, coldiron, Thelen, etc) are legal. Who do you think has hold backs?

Define a holdback? If a kid is in the 8th grade and turns 14 after Sept 1st I dont consider that a holdback. If you go down to the Eastern part of the state you will see kids who are considered older 8th graders being held back an additional year.

The true holdback definition in my mind is where the kid is older by lets say 6-8 months than most of his classmates but gets held back another year so he can be a 19 yr old Sr.

 

There are a couple kids right now who are stud sophomores for HS teams down in Southern/EKY but are already 17 yrs old. They will be 19 yrs old before their Sr Season starts. One player in particular has an August birthday and will turn 20 only 3 months after graduating HS.

Define a holdback? If a kid is in the 8th grade and turns 14 after Sept 1st I dont consider that a holdback. If you go down to the Eastern part of the state you will see kids who are considered older 8th graders being held back an additional year So a 14 yr old in the 8th grade today will be 18 during his SR year. And that's how it should be 14 in the 8th grade. If a kid is the oldest on the floor and dominating he is probably to old If a kid is shaving and the other kids don't have an arm hair they are probably to old. There are rare cases but majority of kids develop physically about the same time. The sad thing is the parent and kid get their glory when the kid is 13 and then their kid doesn't make the varsity team. Il bet highlands has a kid or 2. I know almost all the schools have a kid or 2 that's a hold back. But the worse thing is when you see it in aau because you can advance your kid up but the parents want glory instead of development. Either way I tell my kids just play hard the other kids and parents know they are older they have to live with it

I will take the bet.... There is not one kid on highlands 8th grade team who was 14 before sept 1... In fact, their biggest kid, 6'3" jake Schneider, turned 13 over the summer. Kids do not, in my experience, all develop at about the same time....

So...kids with diagnosed lds and such who are held back early in their schooling shouldn't play in 8th grade so that the less developed kids get a shot at glory? Isn't that the same problem, taking middle school success too seriously. I have twin "hold backs." In soccer they play with their age group and in bball they play with their grade. They won't be earning a full ride in either. They enjoy playing with their friends. The real issue seems to be not "hold backs," but idiot parents on both sides who pump these kids up or rip them down.
