It's a challenge to find enough refs that can make 5:00 games. If you limit them to KHSAA refs you've got a smaller pool to choose from. Plus, you get KHSAA refs that simply do not want to work MS games. I've been to MS games so there was no way I was working them. Not worth the time and money.

 

So sometimes you get good refs and sometimes you get guys that are not fully trained.

Officiating is not great in NKY at the middle school level. No doubt it could be a lot better. However, parent behavior at these games towards the officials is often atrocious. Parents screaming "walk" or "travel" every other possession, crying foul all the time. These middle school games are many times difficult to officiate, and there are sometimes huge differences in teams abilities. If you call everything, games will take forever, and be even more difficult to watch....and people still won't be happy. There isn't enough money in the world for me to officiate those games.

Starting next year that may all change. With KHSAA oversight of MS sports, officials will have to be KHSAA certified to do MS games.

It's not a matter of being able to ignore it. It's really just a matter of a good official wanting to even deal with it. RJS nailed it.

I agree with needing to be able to ignore it. But, small gyms, with the crowd close, and the fact that some of these parents make it personal, it's tough to ignore for 3+ hours of game time, much of which is often lousy. Like Clyde said, it's not worth the time or money for a High School official to put up with it. After sitting through 6 years of NKMSAA basketball with my daughter, and then my oldest son, I can't tell you how many times I felt for the officials and the crap they had to put up with. I was thrilled my youngest decided to wrestle.

You and I.....absolutely!! I can think of a few exceptions though;-) I can also think of a couple that don't share your opinion of me being a nice guy.

Caught the Conner/HHS 6th and 7th grade games. 6th grade game was good albeit sloppy. Good game for 3 quarters. HHS made a big run in the 4th to put it away.

 

HHS has really nice guard play. Pass really well.

 

Conner has a nice team with some nice athletes. Just couldn't handle pressure.

 

7th grade game wasn't very pretty. Very low scoring I think it was about 13-11 at half. HHS has a nice team. Big kid has a chance to be good as he develops. Nice solid guards. Conner has two very nice players. Hicks and #35. HHS sat in a zone and Conner simply couldn't get anything going.

That is this group's MO, win ugly. They looked good a couple of times when Salter and Huddleston exchanged interior passes and later on during the explosion when Hunter and Affeld penetration and finished.

In 6th grade action I heard CC Purple lost to Camp Ernst by 8 or so..
