Kenton County Schools do allow events to take place on Sundays. It does require special permission, and you need to have a good reason, but it can be done. There are restrictions to the times (can't start until a certain hour).

Again, they do not completely prohibit Sunday events. Some state championships take place on Sundays, I've seen wrestling events pushed to Sundays because of snow days, etc. So while events are not specifically prohibited, special permission is required, and if there isn't a real good reason, the request will likely be denied. As to why the rule exists, I don't know the exact reason. I really don't have a huge problem with it. Regular Sunday events would mean students wouldn't have at least one whole day off of school activity. As it is, many of these basketball teams play 2-3 games a week, and have practice on days they don't play. Do they really need to play/practice 6-7 days a week?? And Kenton and Boone county aren't the only schools with the rule. And knowing that many schools do have this rule, why schedule a contest on a Sunday??

Call it what you want. Why sign up for a tournament that you know ends on a Sunday, when you know it will take special circumstances and permission to play on a Sunday. This isn't a new rule, and is pretty common knowledge. This isn't on the BOE, it's on the Coach for scheduling the tournament while knowing the rule. It's pretty easy to figure out that there isn't going to be much hope in getting permission to play a meaningless, preseason tournament championship game on a Sunday. If this were a district championship, or some other major, season ending championship, that couldn't be made up at some other time, the chances of playing would be much better. You can dig all you want, but what you'll find, is that the BOE has been consistent in only allowing teams to play on Sunday's under very special circumstances. Maybe the better way to explain the rule is to say "Don't schedule things on Sunday unless you have a really good reason".

To my knowledge, no. Go check the Kenton County School's (or whatever county you live in) website, and look at the event calendars and see if any events are scheduled on Sundays. The only events I've seen scheduled on a Sunday are State Championship games (football and Volleyball come to mind), and district/regional wrestling tournaments that were delayed by snow on Saturday, which had to be contested by a certain date, and because of logistical issues, cannot be held at any other time.

 

It's not really a restrictive policy. It doesn't prevent teams from being able to play in a reasonable number of games. We are talking about a preseason basketball tourney. If this were for a state or district championship, the chances of being able to play and getting permission would be much higher. Again, this is on the coach for scheduling a tournament that has a Sunday end date. This policy has been in existence for a very long time.

I don't care what age you are, that puts those boys at an increased injury risk. If anyone gets hurt in these games there will be a PR nightmare brought down from the heavens.
