BGP 1A Rankings for 9-22

Featured Replies

Probably as good of a deduction as any other. Should they and mayfield get to the final game again, two things for sure ( mayfield was way better than Williamsburg last year, but mayfield is no where near the offensive team they were a year ago.)

Like Al Davis used to say about the Raiders "just win baby" that's what Mayfield has done this season. We're not looking for "style " points but you could say the lose to McCracken County had some style to it. Mayfield is a young team with tremoudous room for growth.

1) Mayfield

2) Pikeville

3) Beechwood

4) Williamsburg

5) Frankfort

The rest sounds right.

1 mayfield is still number 1 because not been beaten by a class A team since Hazard

2 Williamsburg - returned almost everyone and added the preseason 5a player of the year at halfback and even though they finally got tested last week which is good for them but there still undefeated and will possibly finish the regular season undefeated.

3 Pikeville- They have beat some solid competition including Belfry, Hazard and Prestonsburg. Normally I would put probably put Beechwood at 3 but I think Pikeville is more deserving than the Wood at this time.

4 Beechwood Ranked at 4 at the moment because of beating a very solid Flyers team but this win is there only solid win as they crushed a way down Holy Cross team. Beechwood needs to remain competitive in there game with Cov Cath and dominate the rest of there schedule and yes I mean Newport Central Catholic as well.

5 Frankfort- Still a very dangerous team and I'm not going to let a rivalry score full me on how good this team is and can be. People better not sleep on them because Beechwood beat Franklin Co pretty handily. They do have a road trip to play a 2A power in Florida and that kind of trip should prepare them for trip to Beechwood in late November.

6 Hazard- Bulldogs are getting better every day and they are becoming more dangerous in the passing game because teams are keying on Jones and when it comes playoff time you will have to defend the pass as well as a hard nose running back who will probably be rested since the offense will be just a dangerous throwing as running.

6A Russellville- They are undefeated and I have them ranked at 6 with Hazard because they have some solid playmakers and it seems like there line in holding up quite well but they have Franklin Simpson next and in a few weeks Mayfield and a very good South Warren team at seasons end.

8 Raceland- They are very solid team and there only loss is to an Ashland team with two D-1 players but other than the last game against against Coal Grove Raceland has played weak teams. But they do have Lawerence Co next and two very important district games with Fairview and Paintsville and they end the season with Ironton Ohio who just thumped Ashland.

9 Holy Cross( Lou ) This team is creeping up and others better realize it and they possibly may be a dangerous team to play in the playoffs.

10- There are a number of teams you could put here such as Paris, Bethlehem,Paintsville, and Campbellsville.

Is Russellville better than Hazard or vise versa

While still a couple of tough games on the schedule, Mayfield will have the next month (Marshall, 2 Fultons, and open) to work on the offensive side of the ball. If they don't look better by Russellville, they probably won't. It's hard not to compare this team to the last several, and I think the gap is much closer in 1A; however, as I felt at the beginning of the season, I don't know if another team in 1A can get over that hump and pass them by. I will enjoy watching how 2 through 10 shakes down though over the next several weeks, but Mayfield won't go anywhere with the teams they play before travelling to R'Ville.

What makes me doubt Russellville is:

RHS 29

Ft. Campbell 27

Ft. Campbell simply isn't very good at all. I am tempted to compare Ft. Campbell to Somerset but don't think that is quite fair. I will say FCHS is between Letcher Central (Hazard won by 14) and Somerset (Hazard won by 34) if that says anything. Rville's schedule has been really weak thusfar as both Trigg and FC are way down.

I think Hazard and Raceland each are a tier above Russellville based off this.

I think Rville poses little to no threat to compete with Mayfield this year.

this would be a good stretch for Mayfield to try some things they normally wouldn't have done with this brutal schedule they have played in the last 5 games. Throw a little more etc.

We definitely don't have a typical mayfield team on the field this year. Our qb is young, short(hurts a lot), and doesn't read defenses well when passing. Our receivers are slower than past years. We have no real deep threat. Defense is still pretty good though still a little iffy in the secondary. Front 7 are legit. I do believe we will at least make it to state pretty easily. But my real fear is moving up to 2A next year. Our dominating days could be over for a while if we don't improve sufficiently. People need to grow up on the field and we need more speed out there.

I like Frankfort at No 5 and move the other 3 up. Maybe flip Beechwood and Pikeville at 2/3.

Based on what most of the Mayfield fans are saying this is not your typical Mayfield team but the appear to have a solid defense and that can take you a long way. It appears Mayfield may be more susceptible this year but the final outcome depends on how well the offense develops.

I agree

I feel the defense is well ahead of last year. The offense has been more conservative but that should be expected as the new young QB learns the position. The QB is ahead of where both Luke and Jake Guhy were their first year starting and is getting better at a much faster rate than I expected. The offensive line has been a pleasant surprise, they are pretty dang good and the running game is well ahead of where it was last year. The offense will remind some of 2011 where we are more reliant on the run though instead of bruising Jonathan Jackson we have Bright. I am overall very pleased with where we are and that is way above where I expected to be at this point. This has turned out to be a pretty dang good football team despite its youth and inexperience. In short, with what had to be replaced, Mf is the biggest surprise so far in 1A

Why worry about tomorrow before you live today

Enjoy this ride we are on, its does not look to be over just yet

I completely disagree with your take, we are young and inexperienced but improving at a rapid clip. I fully expect a much more experienced team the next couple of years that should thrive in AA. The talent pool appears to be a good as it has ever been all the way down into the grade school. I think if you are going to get us this is the year but that is not going to be easy. I could not be happier with where this program is at right now. Welcome aboard!

Gotta disagree somewhat. This is a different team...yes. Not typical? No. We are winning which is typical...winning differently but winning. I think this team is coming along nice. True that we don't have a receiver running a 4.4 BUT we have very above average slot receivers (outside aren't getting much action) who will get the first down and move the chains. very balanced attack which is all you can ask from any team.

We have to remember that Tucker has been out since the McCracken game. I really think he is a threat on the outside when he is available. I hope he comes back healthy soon.

This is true. This team is fine...not sure why folks think this is just such an atypical team other than being spoiled about not being up by 30 at halftime every game.
