Just hit me, one reason to keep playing them, GATE MONEY. The big schools bring a good crowd and good money. The Crowd at Newport last night for SK NCC was huge.

NewCath would get more out of playing a decent 1A school.

I think the N. Ky. 6A schools have their programs in line. They are mostly two platooning. Neither New Cath nor Beechwood has beaten a 6A school in the past two seasons. With schedules being reworked this year, I think it is time for these two small school powers to downsize their schedule. All they are going to get out of playing the N. Ky. 6A schools is injuries. What do you think?

 

Depends on which 6A teams they play. Beechwood plays competitively against 4A CCH who is better than all the NKY 6A teams.

The problem may be solved somewhat when the new district alignments happen next year. I would say that the question was asked the wrong way. BW and NCC will play the 6A schools as long as the 6A want to schedule them. But I think it is time for NKY 6A schools to get rid of the 1A and 2A schools on their schedule if they really want to become any kind of a state threat. They need to look to Ohio as the GCL schools are always looking for games.

 

BW I'm sure would like to keep Dixie and/or CovCath. NCC would like to keep Campbell Co and have at least one more large school game.

I ask the question because the way I see it we are getting to a crossroads in N. Ky. It may be different elsewhere in the state. I see N. Ky. 6A taking a big step forward over the past couple years. In Cincinnati, I don't know of any small schools that play big schools and vice versa. Now, the Harbin system surely has a lot to do with that. But the fact is in Ohio small schools can't beat the good big schools. The big schools play platoon football and have too much size and depth. In N. Ky. 6A is on that path. Beechwood has a really good team this year. I don't think they could beat Dixie Heights or Simon Kenton. I have strong doubts they could beat Campbell County. Boone County and Ryle would be interesting this year and maybe wins, but that is a crap shoot on the schedule. In two years, I see Boone fully on track with two platoon football and at a level that Beechwood can not beat them. Put Boone and Ryle on the schedule because you think you might be able to beat them and then Ryle is back to where they were in 2010 and what have you gained?

 

For Beechwood, I don't think scheduling the 2A schools is the answer. The only 2A team that will consistently give Beechwood a game that will prepare them for a state title game is New Cath. If anyone thinks Lloyd, Walton Verona or Newport would be within 3 TD's of Beechwood this year, please get your hands on game film. I am just saying, take it down a notch to the 4A and 5A schools and you will face teams better than almost everyone else in 1A, have a chance at winning the game, not get your players beat up too bad and prepare your team for the playoffs.

I don't think BW should water down their schedule. They have to play tough teams early due to the dreadful 1A schedule they have to play.

I'm shocked this is really a debate. BW 1A is dreadful. Their OOC games are the only games they can get good competition.

 

My guess is most BW fans would not want to water down the schedule.

Beechwood has options... they could go to Louisville DeSales or Danville or other programs in an hour to hour and a half drive from Beechwood. Mayfield takes long trips every year. If Beechwood only wants to schedule in their immediate area then they have few options.

Beechwood puts one road trip team in their schedule. The past two years it has been Franklin County which is about an hour and a half. Before that it was Elizabethtown which is two and half hours. They had Prestonsburg on the schedule a couple years.

BW and NCC are playing the schedules they need to be playing. Don't water down the schedule.

 

BW has coaching issues which I have been saying for years and the road has now grown to roads (was Mayfield, now Mayfield and Frankfort) that have to be gone through to win state. NCC is in a down period of football players right now.

 

At one school obvious moves have to be made, and have been needed for some time. Either change the head man, or change the assistant coaches-simple as that. If you can't make those moves, then the drought continues. In A football either you are the champ or the runner up, and anything besides that is a mediocre football team in a mediocre football state.

Here is the main problem Beechwood is dealing with. When they were dominating, they were regularly as good or better than all but 5-10 teams in the state regardless of class. Right now Mayfield is at that level and all you find out when they can't get the job done against a good but not great team like Dixie is that they aren't getting past Mayfield for the Class A title. That's the goal, and right now Beechwood isn't on the same level.

 

If they drop the 6A schools they simply find out the reality of the situation in November. The issue isn't solved either way...

It was only 3 years ago BW blew out Dixie and SK. Cov Cath is a different animal, they are becoming a force. 6a is a complete joke around here. Keep playing them.

I respect both sides of the argument on this one, though I tend to side with keep playing the big schools. Typically, the games are marquee early season matchups that most area fans pay close attention to. That's a credit to the NCC and Beechwood programs.

 

For those who are suggesting who each school play instead though, you do realize this is a two-way street correct? You can say Beechwood should play Lloyd and Newport all you want, if the other school wants no part of it, it's not happening.

 

The middle-of-the-road NKY teams aren't ever going to stand in line to play NCC or Beechwood. If the Tigers and Breds don't play the schools they are playing now, they will find it tough to complete their schedule without traveling a significant amount. And travel/return games from teams out of the area also just crush revenue.

 

Given all possibilities, the current schedule may be the best option for the schools. In year's like this, I get it has to be frustrating for everyone involved though.
