Is it time New Cath and Beechwood stopped scheduling the 6A schools?

KHSAA report SK 1700 NCC 353 Highlands 940.

This year it could be argued that Simon Kenton is good enough to beat Highlands. What are the numbers for the other NKY 6A schools?

Point being: the school with the larger enrollment does not necessarily have a better team, the team with the larger enrollment does not necessarily have the larger players and the the team with the larger players do not necessarily win.

KHSAA report SK 1700 NCC 353 Highlands 940.

The bishop is waiting till NewCath and Brossart are at 200 till they combine lol

Canned answer, if they are all wearing equipment the size increase will be proportional. Come on man.

For the sake of argument, I think everyone would agree over the last ten years Highlands has been the best team in NKY. We will use that as a given. With that said, what is their enrollment size compared to the NKY 6A schools? and are Highlands players typically larger then other team's players?

Caveat: I don't want the "Highlands is different" answers because that doesn't provide useful information. The same can be said for Covington Catholic, or NCC prior to this year, and Beechwood.

Highlands has had some size on the lines the last two years but historically their lines have been smaller than the better schools they've faced. Numbers wise they're usually much larger as they seem to usually have 80-90 on the varsity squad.

My son went up against Highlands quite often when he was playing HS ball. He once told me that it wasn't that the Bluebirds were bigger, just that they were quicker, stronger, more athletic and smart. He said, "the program prepares them well."

Thank you. And, I'm sure you, and the other Highlands fans, would agree that larger linemen are not always better linemen. Likewise, I'm sure you would agree that Highlands has 80 players and many of the 6A schools do not.

Enrollment numbers of a school do not correlate to the quality of the football program, for the life of me I don't understand why people don't get that.

I agree with your comments. That leads back to my thoughts that not only are Beechwood and NCC playing 5A & 6A schools, they are playing the best 5A & 6A schools in the area.

No they don't. But good 6A programs have a huge advantage over good 1A & 2A schools. The enrollment numbers do correlate to having a much deeper pool of bodies to work with. I'd surely like to pick the best 11 - 20 players from a pool of 90 than from a pool of 40.

Good 6A programs that "Platoon" have a great advantage over a good 1A or 2A team that does not platoon. The number advantage is only an advantage if it is used. If you play 18 players on offense and a different 18 players on defense you have an advantage on me if I play the same 18 players on offense and defense.

Having a larger pool does not mean you will find better players, it means you have a better chance and finding more players. If you don't get more players out of the deal you are no different then a 1A team.

For example: a local 4A coach was once quoted as saying, "we are a 4A school with a 1A roster". What he meant was he was a 4A school but he had to play his best 18 players the whole game. He couldn't take advantage of a school with larger enrollment because he wasn't get the benefit of getting more players from the enrollment.

Ok, so put this in perspective for me. We have decided larger enrollment means: 1. you have bigger players, 2. better players, 3. more of a chance to get better players, and 4. are overall better in every way. Then explain how 2A DeSales just beat 6A St. Xavier in a JV game.

Sure, it's JV, but St. Xavier has somewhere around 100 JV players and one of the largest male enrollments in the state to DeSales 40 players and what 200 students?

Please tell me how this is possible.

God was on their side. :sssh:

No, Beechwood and NCC do not need to stop scheduling bigger neighbors. You find out more about your team when you face adversity and your weakness are exposed. Their goal is in November and December.

The ability to Platoon is the key....It is much easier to consider platooning if you have 90 kids to choose from....vs. a pool of 30-40 kids. Im thinking that your odds of being able to field 22 kids...give or take a few, is much better. The other aspect which has been discussed is coaching...you have to be able to create the environment, have the ability to teach, and get the "buy-in" from the kids. Having 90 kids to choose from doesn't do you any good if they cannot be "coached-up" or are not athletes to begin with....In my opinion, thats what separates programs, whether it is a 6a program or a 1a program.....there are good programs at all levels. Coaching, environment, buy-in, and athletes.

More important is the 4 year average number of boys that KHSAA uses for classifcation. Info found here:

Have these numbers been growing for Simon Kenton and Dixie?

The interesting thing for Cooper is, they are closer to the size of a 4A school yet are going to be playing 6A next year. I think that has more to do with playing teams in this area for their district more than anything.

Well, first of all, there are always going to be anomalies in any statistical area. It may be a year where DeSales has an unusual number of talented sophomores or St. X has a down class. Injuries can factor in and at the JV level you may have one team playing a significant number of Juniors while the other plays only Sophs. Did DeSales have a +5 turnover ratio? There could be any number of reasons. How often do these two teams play each other and how often does DeSales win?

And I'm not saying better in every way. Quality coaching and tradition can make a significant impact on a football team's performance as well.
