Platooning is the key in my opinion. 1A schools do not have the numbers to be able to put the quality player on the field that they need in order to compete with some of the more talented, DEEPER rosters of the BETTER 4,5, and 6A schools. Beechwood can probably rotate some other kids in with out a big drop off....but probably only 3 or 4 positions. Fresh bodies are able to compete at a higher level. Not sure if Beechwood does this as well as they could....especially the last 2 years.

In speaking about a prior post.....The O-line and D lines that Beechwood faced with Dixie and Mt Healthy were BIGGER and DEEPER than Beechwood. Dixie especially wore Beechwood out with depth at those "trench" positions.

I hope they continue to schedule the tough non conference opponents, I just hope they can develop better depth in the trenches. Just my opinion.

I would not mind at all seeing Beechwood on Walton's schedule. I don't think Coach Barth would be afraid to schedule them either. NCC being a possible playoff opponent every year maybe a little different but not a bunch.

Still think we are talking about different things. The prize is in November. These two schools don't care about the regular season loss to Campbell or SK, they care about big trophy at WKU.

Here is what drives me nuts. Everyone says that the 2 a schools are playing bigger kids. How are they bigger. Just because the player goes to Dixie, Ryle, Campbell County, Trinity, or Male does not make them bigger. these kids are all about the same age and size. Now what is true is that a AAAAAA school does have more players

 

The size of the school doesn't necessarily change the size of the player, but it surely changes how many larger players each school has. So if on average, 15% of your roster is 200+ pound bodies (I have no idea on accuracy but play along), that means a roster with 40 players has 6 large lineman and a roster of 90 has 13-14 large lineman. So the small school ends up having to play smaller players to fill the interior line spots. That's how the size of the school effects the size of the players.

 

If the smaller school gets into a situation where they lose 2 or 3 lineman due to injury, it becomes a major problem.

With all due respect to NCC, SK looked like a varsity squad playing a freshman team. The size differential was dramatic. I believe LB would concur as he said as much in the game thread.

But it all runs in cycles. 5 years ago Ryle was the class of 6A and Beechwood/NCC had no chance of competing with them while both were beating Dixie and Campbell. Now Dixie and Campbell appear to be a little strong for the smaller schools, but will it stay that way?

 

It would be great for both schools to have Scott, Holmes, Boone and Conner on the schedule as non-district big schools but will those schools schedule NCC & Beechwood? The last thing a 5A or 6A school wants is to get beaten by a smaller school.

 

On the converse, does Cooper, Dixie, Campbell, Simon and CovCath get what they are looking for from these games?

I do not think team photo's will tell the story....the way seeing opposing O line and D lines lined up over the ball does..BIG doesn't always mean BAD (meaning..fast, in shape, athletic, strong...etc) however for the 5 and 6a schools around NKY, it has tremendously improved over the years. The programs have gotten better. The game has changed and with 2 platooning in the schools with large numbers...Large fresh bodies are on the field for most of the game.....which makes life hard on a 1 or 2a program like Beechwood or NCC.

Canned answer, if they are all wearing equipment the size increase will be proportional. Come on man.

 

For the sake of argument, I think everyone would agree over the last ten years Highlands has been the best team in NKY. We will use that as a given. With that said, what is their enrollment size compared to the NKY 6A schools? and are Highlands players typically larger then other team's players?

 

Caveat: I don't want the "Highlands is different" answers because that doesn't provide useful information. The same can be said for Covington Catholic, or NCC prior to this year, and Beechwood.
