According to the lawyer for Brown's friend, he has NOT recanted his story. He is still saying that Brown had his hands in the air saying "Don't shoot" as the officer ran at him shooting.

 

Saw him on Rev. Al's show on MSNBC a few minutes ago.

 

Either that is what he really saw or there is a lot of pressure being put on him to stick with that story.

For the sake of this part of your post....another aspect of when I say "it's been going on for decades" is how many times has something happened when a governor, U.S. President and a U.S. Attorney General should have intervened but didn't? The distrust between blacks and the government and the police goes back decades and that is what I was referring to when I said "it's been going on for decades". Can I cite specific examples? Not off the top of my head but blacks were still being hung in the south well into the 1960s and Emmitt Till is a situation that pops up on my radar as well. If you're going ignore the treatment of blacks after blacks were supposed to be free from slavery then I see why you would say that the incidents I cited aren't good parallels. They all run together with the same sentiment.

The intervention by the federal government in cases where southern states were enforcing unconstitutional laws that conflicted with federal laws after federal courts ruled in favor of the U.S. government is not a parallel to what is being done in the case of Ferguson.

 

You said that there had been dozens of cases similar to what is happening in Ferguson over the past few decades, yet so far, all you have mustered has been some cases from 45 to 50 years ago in the deep south that were cut and dried instances where blacks were systematically being denied their civil rights.

 

In the case of Ferguson, the charge of racism was made with no evidence that was a factor in the shooting. Even if there had been early indications that racism was involved in the shooting, the local police department deserved an opportunity to handle it.

I couldn't give two craps about the writer or their "agenda". The situation alone is a light in to why locals don't trust their police department. But shift away from that if you must...

Fair enough. I'll ask this question then. He was beaten almost to unconsciousness, but still was able to shoot at and hit him six times? That's impressive...

When I made that statement in my mind I was thinking about cases of perceived racial injstices between blacks/police/government.

Any attempt to change that initial thought process when that statement was made is over analyzing the point of that statement and why that statement was made. You've taken that whole statement out of context and turned it into something else. I don't even know what you're talking about at this point.

This was not a similar incident at all, but the intervention of the FBI in the case you mentioned and in similar cases in the mid-1960s was perfectly justified.

 

In the case of the Ferguson incident, there was no reason to suspect that the Ferguson Police Department and the state of Missouri would ignore the facts and automatically exonerate Officer Wilson.

 

Politicians in this case have simply caved under the threat of more looting and rioting. That is the wrong reason for involvement by the DOJ and the FBI - and Gov. Nixon was clearly wrong to publicly call for the prosecution of Officer Wilson instead of allowing the investigation to reach a conclusion.

 

I don't necessarily disagree, but you asked when the Feds had gone ahead of investigation by Local. You didn't qualify it until now.

I suppose the 1st amendment is only extended to those who are protesting against the police in Ferguson. Apparently 2 people supporting Officer Wilson showed up in Ferguson and they were quickly pelted with bottles and whisked away by police for their safety. But it's mostly peaceful there, right?

I absolutely agree that I would not go there. I would not want my family to go there. I am not interested in protesting, period. I think the people who did it are probably a little crazy. With that said, if they were being peaceful, they have the right to do it.
