Dudley Hilton is a good one but the same criteria you mentioned in terms of titles can be said for Tom Duffy (Danville and HHS).

 

Yeagle had an incredible run and Smith took a 1-9 program and built it into the first 5 time Consecutive Champion.

 

What about the older ones? Homer Rice at HHS. Garnis Martin at Bardstown. Ed Miracle at Lynch. Does Lynn Ray from Cov Cath deserve recognition in the conversation?

Glad you mentioned Homer Rice. His name isn't going to be at the top of KY record books, but his contribution to football in this state, and everywhere, were enormous, right?

Haywood is pretty close to it with his numbers... all the while doing it in a very rural area. Even then with such a prestigious list I would fall short of calling him a lock.

Depends on your criteria, I guess. Seems everyone has their own set.

Shew, that is one heck of a list right there. My suggestion? Throw all of those names in a hat, and pick out any four and you can't go wrong.

 

How many of the guys in that group have won multiple titles at more than one school? The only ones I can think of are Hilton as you pointed out (Bell County and Bourbon) & Jaggers (Trigg County and Fort Knox- won multiple titles at both schools). What's even more impressive that that, is those two guys won titles at places that had NEVER won a title before, and haven't since they've left.

I really like Sam Harp more than Chuck Smith, Philip Haywood or many others being named.

Think there are 3 definites... and one open for discussion:

 

Mueller- IMHO the best Coach in KY History. The Most State Titles, The Most State Finals, and an unprecedented run

 

Haywood- The consummate coach who has mastered doing more with less. All-Time wins leader, respected by his peers, and a pretty nice resume of State Championship appearances to boot.

 

Beatty- The next level coach. Took a Kentucky program to new heights and in my opinion helped elevate Kentucky High School Football's level nationally.

 

The Last Head is open for debate:

I lean with Hilton... the Coach who retired as the all-time wins leader and took two different programs to State Championships.

I think the argument for Coach Haywood being a "definite" over Coach Schneider is a little shakey. Granted, Haywood is still active, but Schneider is still only 31 wins behind Haywood, and they both stand at 3-6 in the state finals.

So we're working on the Mt. Rushmore of coaches....but who get's the Crazy Horse Memorial built after them? You know...the memorial that gets built to honor someone who was a great leader who ended up being defeated by the opposition?
