Aaron Floyd's Waiver Denied

Featured Replies

Saw him at Covcath practice yesterday with a clipboard and watching. My guess is there is an appeal that should be back by the middle of next week.......

Sounds like Boone is out of the equation then.

Helmets and shoulder pads starts 8/1 for everyone doesn't it? If the middle of next week is @8/6 and he wins the appeal I wouldn't think that would be an issue

I am uncertain exactly how the rule is now or worded but wouldn't he have to do three days helmets and shoulder pads before going full equipment for 10 days?

It's possible- not really sure. But at that point all you lack is football pants- doubt he'd be held out of much with only that lacking.

(2) Preseason and during season practice in football shall be as follows:

a. The first legal organized practice wearing a helmet only shall be no earlier than July 22;

b. The first three (3) days of organized practice shall be in

helmets only and the next three (3) days shall be in helmets

and shoulder pads for acclimatization and acclimation;

c. For the three practice days in shoulder pads and helmets,there can be no contact with other players, only with sleds and dummies;

d. Provided such activity is conducted and supervised by coaches meeting all qualifications of Bylaw 25, thesepractice sessions shall be covered by KHSAA Catastrophic insurance;

e. The remainder of the gear specified in NFHS Rule 1-5 can beissued and practice in pads can begin no earlier than August1 or the week day following the completion of the requiredthree (3) days of practice in helmets and shoulder pads ifsuch date is after August 1; and

KHSAA Handbook

If you read further down it also says you must have 5 contact practices before you can play. So whenever Aaron gets ruled eligible (assuming he does) he would have to participate in 3 practices in helmet only, three in helmet and shoulder pads, and 5 in full gear. That's 11 days of practice. When is Cov Cath's first game?

I may be 100% wrong and I likely am but the helmet only and shoulder pads only rules apply to the entire team not individuals. If his eligibility is granted he can immediately dress in whatever the rest of the team is wearing.

Do these same rules apply if a player is injured at the start of practices?

Anyone who played high school sports probably has a story from every game they played where certain kids ran their mouths. Doesn't mean it's a bad school and doesn't really mean they are a bad kid. I remember times when I thought to myself wow did that kid really just say that. But in the middle of a game, especially a contact sport like football, emotions run high. The kid could have easily been semi hurt on that play and demanding everyone to get off of it so they can walk it all real fast before the game. I am not condoning bad language but teenage kids cursing during a football game is not really a big deal. Also, you basically said by that story that because a student attends NCC they are expected to act better.

What I said was my 15 year old expected them "to act better". I bear no such delusions.

He lives in Ryle district.. Couldn't he go to Ryle and be auto eligible for going to the correct school he is districted by?

I think so. You have to go through it to be able to play is the way I read the rule.

No. It's still a transfer; still would have to sit out a year.

I'm pretty sure it for the heat acclimation of the individual.

If he goes to any Boone County school and the Board deems him to eligible, for whatever reason, I almost guarantee he will be ruled eligible by the KHSAA. I see him at Cooper, as to where he finally lands, and he will play this season.

I can see it going this way too but it is a total end around the spirit of the KHSAA rule.

I want to add to this, if the KHSAA approves him to play at Cooper it means that any parent that works in the Boone County school system can switch schools (Boone, Ryle, Conner, Cooper) as they see fit which would be in definite violation of the KHSAA rule as it stands and could give one or more of those schools a competitive advantage moving forward.

In other words, it would be a really bad precedent.
