For the hard core sports fan. Would you give up sports for love?

Featured Replies

Yep, I played Rec League Basketball 3 nights a week for years after HS. Met my wife and started dating and played 2 maybe 3 more games...dating was more fun than basketball at the Y!

If you're required to give up something you love for another person, then that person doesn't truly love you.

On the other hand, you should be willing to give up or cut back activities for someone you love.

I agree...I quit playing willingly 100%.

I love sports, so to give up one would mean giving up the other.

Brad Paisley's "I'm gonna miss her" bout sums it up.

No.

Be more specific with the question but my answer is still no. Better yet, I wouldn't fall in love with someone who didn't like sports.

Giving up sports more defined.

By giving up I mean watching playing coaching or anything else that goes with being a sports fan.

This is a subject that is VERY close to my heart. Several years ago was engaged to a beautiful young lady...perfect match physically (she was tall, thick, attractive), educationally, philosophically...everything almost to a tee. At the time I was heavily involved in men's softball...traveled most weekends from April to early-mid October to play, played a lot of league ball during the week...could be a few miles to a few hundred miles depending on what was going on. I was very good and I "loved" the game.

We met on a blind date...and the blind date almost didn't happen because I was way late...reason being...you guessed it, I was playing in a softball tournament and this particular game took a lot longer than usual. But luckily we did meet and after a couple of dates it didn't take me long to recognize this lady was special. Once I figured this out, I told her straight up because I wanted her to know...softball is a passion of mine, I'm very good at it and love playing it and you need to understand it's something I'm gonna do till I can't do it any more. No problems with that she told me, in fact she said she thought it was great I had such a passion for it.

So we get serious. Next softball season rolls around, and we have been together going on a year now...and the first inklings of trouble start..."you know...how about you not play as much softball...maybe just play one weekend a month or something like that". May as well poked me in the eye with a hot poker iron. Not going to do that I said...and we have already had this conversation and you said you understood.

Fast forward a couple of years...this discussion comes up every now and then but I try to squash it as quickly as I can...I'm coming back home from a world tournament in Florida, walk in the door...she has her stuff packed and said she's leaving. Hits me like a ton of bricks and devastates me. It was gut wrenching for me.

She comes back around a few months later, it's February and wants to give it another try. I say ok. About 3 weeks go by and everything is hunky dory. Weekend comes around and I have a previously scheduled basketball tournament I am playing in that was scheduled way before we got back together. She gets mad and doesn't want me to play. We get in a big argument about sports...breakup #2...this time permanently.

So...no, I didn't give it up for love. And yes, I loved her very much. But my opinion was, if she actually loved ME the way she said she did, then she would not have asked me to give up something I was so passionate about...something that was a positive activity and also helped keep me in shape...and not just softball but sports activities in general as I also played a lot of basketball in those days as well. It's not like my passion was going out with my buddies and getting drunk every night (no I did NOT drink/party when playing softball...I was a serious player), or was going to the strip clubs on weekends or something. No, I was doing something positive, physically engaging, something that had been in my life since I was a little boy. And she wanted me to give it all up.

Depends. If she is trying to force it on me, then no. My friends would hate her, couldn't work.

If it's my call alone, then probably. I like having relations with females a good deal.

"All" or "anything" have a big scope. My answer on that is "NO". However, when I was dating my wife (and we were getting serious), I did give up a bowling night so that we could attend a prayer meeting together. It helped my relationship with God and my relationship with her. It was worth it. Besides, I stink at bowling.

I haven't "given up" sports for love. I've spent less time on sports to be with the woman I love because I want to. She would never force me to stop playing or watching sports because she knows I love it. I have certainly dialed it back some since I got married.

Then obviously you weren't doing something correctly on the court.;)

Well, there has to be sacrifices with any relationship. Even if that means now your wife goes to games with you in which your buddies would have gone with you prior to meeting her. Let's not pretend everyone operates as normal with their social life once they are entrenched with a significant other.
