This is absolutely terrible news. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

"Heroes get remembered but legends never die," and Tony is most definitely a legend. RIP.

Between Glavine, Smoltz and Pedro, he struck out 3 times

Favorite pitcher to hit off of...Greg Maddux. How many people would say that? .429 average. Just ridiculous.

Maddux never struck him out either. 107 at bats.

I thought Rod Carew was the purest hitter I ever saw, until Tony. Sad day for baseball indeed.

20 years and only 434 Strike Outs and NEVER struck out over 40 times in any season...WOW!!!

In his first all-star season in 1984, in 606 at-bats, he had just 23 strikeouts. Amazing. He won the batting title that year by hitting .351. Just an absolute master at the plate.

That's just plain Crazy...Mr Gwynn could rake!

I think he hits .400 in '94. The reason I think that, because he said so.

9200 ABs. K% of 4%. Average for MLB during his time was anywhere from 12% to 16%.

My buddy just sent me the same stats. Absolutely nuts.

When I saw this, I became sick to my stomach. What a terrible day for baseball. He was a legend. And entirely too young...echo the sentiment that cancer sucks.

RIP.

Never hit more than 17 home runs in a season, which he did in 1997. Probably the unfortunate reason he never finished higher than third in MVP voting. In that 1997 season by the way, he led the league in average at .372, sacrifice flies at 12, and total hits with 220. Finished sixth in MVP voting.

My DVR will be full of TG tributes.

They'll start throwing his stats out here like we are and people will realize how ridiculously good he was.

Man, I didn't even know he had been sick. He was absolutely one of my childhood favorites. I used to trade for his baseball cards all the time.
