Tony Gwynn has passed away at age 54. One of the best hitters ever.

He was 54. Cancer sucks

Best hitter I've seen in my lifetime. I was really lucky to watch him in person. Terrible day for baseball

Great, great hitter. I loved watching him hit unless he was facing the Reds.

Wow...I had forgotten that he was sick.

Sucks! My favorite hitter I've ever seen in person.

He's pretty much solely responsible for video being such a large part of baseball today. He was the king of analysis.

It feels like a piece of my teenage years and early adulthood are gone. He is one of the reasons I love baseball as much as I do today.

Over a 20-year career, he made 15 all-star teams, won the National League batting title 7 times, had 3,141 career hits, and is a lifetime .338 hitter.

Certainly in any list of my top five favorite players ever.

The pages in George Will's "Men at Work" of him describing how he reads a pitcher's motions prior to release in order to decide whether to swing or not might still be the most compelling paragraphs I've ever read about baseball.

Requiescat in pace, Tony. You will be missed.

Wait, what?

I remember he had been sick with cancer, but I thought he had beaten it?

This sucks. Best pure hitter I've ever had the pleasure of seeing play.

20 years and only 434 Strike Outs and NEVER struck out over 40 times in any season...WOW!!!

Gwynn is another example of fate or "what might have happened...."

He came into college as a basketball player. Didn't play baseball his first year. His high school teammate was on the baseball team and told his coach to give Gwynn a look. Coach had 2 outfielders who were out due to being hit by a car while they were riding their bicycles.

Had it not been for that bicycle/car accident we might not have seen him hit a baseball.

20 years and only 434 Strike Outs and NEVER struck out over 40 times in any season...WOW!!!

That is easily the most amazing stat I've ever seen with a baseball player. How is that possible?

One of the greats.

Baseball lost a great one today on and off the field
