Batted under .300 once in his entire career. Batted under .310 only TWICE.

A "gentleman of the game" and certainly one of the best hitters ever to play it. Learned he would go to the away ballparks earlier than most, have a meal with and spend time with the grounds crew, of which he knew most on a first name basis.

Tony Gwynn "got it" on and off the field and as mentioned earlier is certainly a legend.

note: He did attribute his cancer to dipping snuff. A good legacy to honor him by would to one, not dip, and two, if you do, stop. As a former "dipper" myself message me if you'd like to know how to stop. If I did it, you can to! :thumb:

Side note: As great as Gwynn was Rod Carew was right there with him.

.328 career average.

Never went more than 3 games without getting on base. In 20 years...

I can close my eyes and see Gwynn glowing when Ted Williams appeared during the AS game at Fenway.

They say his Cancer was caused by his use of chewing tobacco, which in my opinion is much his own fault for making that choice.

I do agree he was one of the best hitters, we have had in a long time.

He must have been discreet with the chewing as I can't remember ever seeing him with a chew.

Kirkjian did a great piece. Just saw it on ESPN's website. I could watch that swing all day.

33/30.5 bat. That's pretty small by MLB standards.

Great read on Gwynn from a former Padres bat boy...

I Was Tony Gwynn's Bat Boy

I rea that earlier today, he was a hall of fame baseball player, but a hall of fame person as well
