June 18, 201412 yr 19 of 20 seasons over .300. Went to a Reds game in the late 80's, my 6 year old son and I were watching batting practice. Gwynn was shagging balls. My son must have yelled at Tony to throw him a ball a million times. He threw it to him and my son has never forgotten. he is 31 year old now. I do believe he still has the ball.

June 18, 201412 yr He must have been discreet with the chewing as I can't remember ever seeing him with a chew. Weird, I can't remember ever seeing him without a dip in while he was on the field. Hopefully this will wake up some baseball players, especially the young guys. I was one of those guys caught up in the baseball culture where everyone was dipping/chewing. I did through most of high school and all of college until my future wife gave me the option of quitting or never kissing her again. While they say they can't prove tobacco use caused the cancer, I think you can certainly say it siding do him any good either. Way too young to have lost him.

Didn't know he passed until the end of the article. June 20, 201412 yr The three best hitters in my lifetime were Gwynn, Carew, and Boggs. Talk about three guys that could flat out rake.
June 20, 201412 yr Anybody else notice the current SI Mag piece on Tony. Did you also notice that about 8 pages later was an add for smokeless tobacco. Left me shaking my head at SI that someone thought that was a good idea.
