June 16, 201412 yr He's pretty much solely responsible for video being such a large part of baseball today. He was the king of analysis. I was managing the Radio Shack downtown in my early 20s and Gwynn came in to buy some cables to hook up the VCR in his room. I was looking at the computer when he asked a question and I knew instantly who it was. We talked baseball for a minute and he was on his way. I will never forget that minute I got with one of the best hitters ever. RIP Tony...

June 16, 201412 yr What a roller coaster for San Diego St. fans - Leonard MVP last night and today Tony Gwynn passes. Gwynn is in the San Diego State Hall of Fame for both basketball and baseball. I believe he still holds the school record for assists. Drafted on the same day by the Padres and the Clippers. Obviously a much better athlete than most people would have guessed. RIP.

Not a person has a bad thing to say about him.
June 16, 201412 yr Never hit more than 17 home runs in a season, which he did in 1997. Probably the unfortunate reason he never finished higher than third in MVP voting. In that 1997 season by the way, he led the league in average at .372, sacrifice flies at 12, and total hits with 220. Finished sixth in MVP voting. If he plays for a team in the eastern time zone, or heck, even just up the coast in LA, he's probably got a mantle full of MVP awards. Even with ESPN, many fans not treated to his greatness in the 11pm Sportscenter, due to playing on the left coast. Sad that even baseball "people" didn't recognize his greatness. RIP Tony Gwynn.
June 16, 201412 yr Gwynn wrote a blog for ESPN once talking about facing Maddux and Glavine. Mr Humble said he had "relatively good success" against them. .429 vs Maddux .312 vs Glavine Yeah, not bad.

June 16, 201412 yr Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn dies of cancer at age 54 | Fox News I always thought he was best pure hitter in my time of watching baseball. Did it so easy and was naturally good. No peds, just natural ability. This sucks.
June 16, 201412 yr I also used to collect cards from the single packs. I had every card that year but his rookie card. If anyone has it send it to me.
June 16, 201412 yr GREAT LINE: "After doubling, Pete Rose, who had been trailing the play, said to Gwynn: "Hey, kid, what are you trying to do, catch me in one night?""
June 16, 201412 yr Gwynn once got ejected for arguing a called 3rd strike. I GUARANTEE that umpire went him thinking "if Tony is arguing I probably missed it."
