If he doesn't lose any money other than the $500k, doesn't seem like much of a penalty to me. Although I'm not really sure what they could legally get away with.

 

I don't think "penalty" should be the concern. In my mind how the world they can be rid of him should be the ultimate goal. Nothing they do will make him not a racist so the best they can do is find a way to force him out.

They are probably scrambling for new ads. You will not see any ads/signage from any of the sponsors who have left.

People often do not get what they deserve.

The NBA can give him any kind of punishment they want. His biggest punishment is going to be when Doc leaves and nobody wants to come play for the Clips or sponsor them as long as he is the owner. He will eventually be forced to sell/step away or watch the entire franchise collapse.

None of those players will take a pay cut. Now that owners are saying to let the players to become free agents and the NBA is reportedly considering that things could get interesting. None will take a pay cut they shouldn't take though.

Prediction - the wife and kids are going to move to buy out dad and get him out of any official capacity with the team.

I understand why people don't like this guy, and are upset by his comments, but I think people are making this out to be way more than it was. He had a private conversation expressing some of his views, which we all (or at least most of us) disagree with.

However, he has done nothing illegal. He isn't discriminating against any players or coaches or fans. He may be overly demanding of what his girlfriend can do, or who she can be seem with, but I don't think that breaks any laws.

 

If you think fans should boycott the team, or free agents should sign elsewhere, or sponsors should pull their sponsorship, I see no issue with those views. If you think the NBA should come down on him to try to force him out, I think that is out of line. A fine makes sense, because he brought bad publicity on the league, but forcing him to sell his franchise I disagree with.
