Yes. It is on the KHSAA website says to submit you application to Daniel Fisher. So if he is taking the apps I would think that rules him out on taking the job. I seen his name as a possible candidate but after reading that I would doubt that is an option.

I have been in Oklahoma for two weeks and was catching up on things and seen this. I also live in Mercer and helped with the stats for Coach Pendygraft and Coach Hall. And the parent play a big part over in Harrodsburg. As most people know it takes a coach a little time to get this going.

I'll back hickory up on this one. I live in Mercer county and the parent situation here is awful. Most of the time it's flat out embarrassing. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Mercer hasn't had a coach stay longer than 4 years in a long time...I played for Frank Wright and parents ran him off after 4 seasons, Brian Pendegraft only 2 seasons after him, then Stacy Hall for 3 seasons, Greg Edwards for (i'm not 100% sure how long), Nelson Cundiff for 3 seasons, and now Britt for 4 seasons. How can a program build any consistency with that level of coaching turnover?

 

Parents played a role in all of these coaches "resigning". Why would anyone want to coach in a situation like this? Please understand that statement actually saddens me because that's where I went to school, but the fact is, in order to coach in Harrodsburg you have to know up front that its a constant uphill battle with parents.

Britt said in the paper he didn't want to resign! It wasn't his choice to stay on another year. The administration chose to let him go. It wasn't that he chose to resign over dealing with parents. Mercer has some positive things going on and getting on here bad mouthing the community will not help with the next hire. If you truly care about the program and the future please get the facts straight as to why this coach isn't coming back next year.

In my personal opinion letting coach Britt go was a HUGE mistake. He's a good coach and a good representative of the community. I wont speculate as to the exact reasons administration let him go, but I've heard the parent complaints for years. Now if I'm hearing them, I'm sure administration has too.

 

I truly do care about this program, I've coached in the 12th region for almost a decade as both an assistant coach and a head coach. I played in the program for 4 years. I bet I have more of a vested interest in that program's success than most. I pull for the titans every chance I get. I even coached there as an assistant under Nelson Cundiff, and if you're going to say that parents and community didn't affect his decision to move on, I'm going to question how closely you're paying attention. We had parents in the coaches office daily complaining about playing time, shots, plays, etc...

 

I want to see the Mercer basketball program be as successful as possible, but to ignore the negative impact parents and the community have had on this program's ability to hire and retain quality coaches is to close your eyes to a huge problem.

He also coached at least one D-1 player at South Oldham. He is currently the girls head coach at Butler and lead them to the regional finals and had them ranked in the state's top 20 all season.

 

Stacey Hall left Mercer and has gone on to be a pretty darn successful AD at Marion County. He also coached Mercer to their only 12th region title.

 

If memory serves me correctly Greg Edwards was the coach at Harrodsburg when they won the 12th region and made a strong run in the state tournament. If he didn't lose a vital piece to his team this year to an ACL injury Boyle would have been a solid contender (girls).

 

You can't ignore facts. Mercer county has run off a lot of very good coaches.

One thing should be remembered when it comes to coaching vacancies. - "There are more bad jobs than there are bad coaches." It is interesting when a particular coaching position is regularly vacant, and when no coach seems to stay there for more than two or three years, or when a five-year stint is considered a long stay. Now this is not to say that Mercer Co. is a bad place to coach - don't the girls' coaches stay there for long stints? Another thing to consider is that when a coach does decide to leave, it doesn't always mean that the parents drove him (or her) away. Coaches leave for many other reasons - finances, family, opportunity/advancement, burn-out, health, a better teaching situation. However, I anticipated that the merger of Harrodsburg and Mercer Co. would have created a 12th region powerhouse by now, but it appears that's not the case. What a pity this is. Anyway, good luck to the Scotties/Pioneers/Hogs/Titans, regardless of who takes the reigns. Evidently, it's a tall challenge to bring all of the factions into a united Titans' tent.

Not trying to pile on Mercer co, but the parent issues at many schools (imo 90%+) across Kentucky are at an all-time high. Bulldog_Chem is spot on, to not think that parents didn’t play into this in some way is plan silly.

 

The parent issues have no boundaries. They come from the rich the poor the clueless the educated and even from past players and alumni. Here are my 2 favorites…

 

“the booster family”

Many good coaches have been ran off by the "booster family" , each school has one, some have several. I'm honestly not sure what the answer is for this type of parent, many people say it takes a strong administration to support their coach. I can't count the number of "strong administrations" who have buckled to the "booster family" , it happens every day and it will continue to happen as long as those families are associated with the sports program.

 

“the NBA parent”

The newest threat comes from the “NBA parent”. This one takes their kid to their 2nd or 3rd school because the old coach was no good. (I.e joey not getting enough shots) Along the way they trash the school and coach to anyone that will listen. This parent type belongs in the “clueless” group. The answer to this one is simple, LET THEM GO…..

 

I could go on and on as I have seen them all, I think you get my point. I’ve sat in the stands for the last 30 years I heard things come out of parents mouths that simply amaze me. If I had to have daily or weekly meetings with those nuts, I think I would resign to…………

^^^^Here's something to ponder. As stated, there are parent "issues" at every school. Whether parent "issues" become parent "problems" depends on how the coach handles them. To say that Mercer is different in this area - better or worse - than other schools demonstrates either personal bias/dislike or just plain ignorance.

 

The Mercer girls coach was alluded to above. He has been there 10-15 years, as has the baseball coach. And both have been highly successful. Go figure.

Parent issues are everywhere. However, they just didn't start when social media took off. They have always been there. The difference between today's generation and of a generation or two ago is that administrators had backbones. Parents complain and say we will pull sponsorship money or I'll take my kid elsewhere. So instead of fighting that battle, administrators choose to give in to parents and get rid of the coach. Short term win but long term the monster has been created and before long those same parents are wanting their jobs as well. I miss the days when administrators, when faced with parent complaints (I am referring to complaints such as playing time, not getting a fair shake, etc), look those parents in the eye and simply say he or she is my coach. If you don't like that, take your kid somewhere else. When he/she doesn't play at their new school then what are you going to do? Usually the end of that conversation. Don't you find it ironic that I'd say easily 95-98% of those complaints come from parents who's kids are marginal players at best. Quit believing your kid is the next Lebron James and start saving for college. If he/she gets money to play at the next level then that's icing on the cake.

I believe a weak AD will get a good coach fired more so than a strong AD keeps an undeserving coach employed.

I'm not saying anything about previous coaches abilitity. I know them and are all good guys. Two of them got out of coaching and two moved on to girls basketball but none have moved on and created a powerhouse somewhere else. If there is such a parent problem here why has our baseball coach been here so long and had so much success at Mercer. Why has the girls varsity coach been there so long and had such succcess? In the case of Britt it is completely unfair to say it is a parent issue. That is completely misinforming others that don't know the situation.
