February 26, 201412 yr Read this morning that the Ashland BOE has voted to have school on Memorial Day. Does anyone else have a problem with this? I believe it's very disrespectful. Thoughts?
February 26, 201412 yr I world prefer they did not, but I do not think it is disrespectful if they do. Respectful is a subjective term. How are cookouts and boating and swimming respectful? Fine activities for sure and nothing disrespectful about them. If the kids had to go to school that day to make up required instruction time, they could also incorporate many respectful activities that day to really reflect and acknowledge the ultimate sacrifice made by our soldiers and heroes.
February 26, 201412 yr I'm with Hoops. To 99% of the kids who are off of school it's just another day off.
February 26, 201412 yr I'm with Hoops. To 99% of the kids who are off of school it's just another day off. And I'm willing to bet it's the same for many adults too. I'd say the number of people who actually celebrate the day in some way is probably pretty low. Quite a few people, especially those in the retail/service industry, work that day. Really, unless you work for a local, city, state or the federal government, there's a good chance you're working on Memorial Day.
February 26, 201412 yr I'm not against it. In fact, if schools had some sort of memorial service or something as part of the school day, it would be WAY more than most kids ever do to commemorate the day. However, as a guy who goes on a regularly-scheduled pilgrimage to baseball stadiums around the country that weekend, Memorial Day suddenly not being a day off for everyone could really put a hurt on those arrangements.

February 26, 201412 yr Author Right across the river from Ashland they have the country's oldest continuous running Memorial Day parade in Ironton, Oh. Not only is it a time to remember all those service men and women who have given their lives serving our great country, but a lot of people use that day as a reflection of all their loved ones that have gone all before us. I would much rather my kids attend school on a Saturday than on Memorial Day.

Sadly, I bet more people would protest going on Saturday than Memorial Day.
February 26, 201412 yr I'm with Hoops. To 99% of the kids who are off of school it's just another day off. If that is correct, shame on us as adults and parents. If we are not teaching our younger generation about respect and honor for those who have served and died, that is a massive fail.
February 26, 201412 yr Memorial Day is one of my favorite holidays and not because of the cookouts. I'm a pretty patriotic individual and have a ton of respect for our country's veterans and servicemen and women. Last year was the first year that I worked that day, serving beer at GABP. The National Anthem just sounded a little better that day. In saying all that, if the schools had an assembly honoring the day, I think it would be great and actually more beneficial for the kids.
February 26, 201412 yr My son loves these type days. He is offered double time and 1/2 to work on MLK day, Presidents day, Memorial Day, and any other Federal Holiday. Me, I'm self employed but I enjoy Memorial day because we spend it with our Families. Those other days, I'm working

In a similar vein, I believe every region in Kentucky uses Memorial Day for all four first round baseball and softball regional tournament games. The weather is typically good and takes away the advantage of one team getting more rest than another. Now that probably shouldn't factor into whether you cancel school or not, but I'm sure there are a great many tournament administrators and coaches that are hoping their school is closed that day.
February 26, 201412 yr Bad idea to have school on that day, I'd rather my kids go to school one day later in the year instead of on Memorial Day.
