Does it have to be a trophy? How about a Tshirt and Certificate?

 

I was grand champion at one of the Eat the Worm Contests at Tumbleweed back in the day. Forgot long ago how many shots/worms it was though. It was actually on the nite of my birthday and my folks and several other family members were there. None of them were around though to the bitter end though thank goodness.

This may change as my kids get old enough to participate in HS sports.

Not my greatest accomplishment, but my greatest award was probably being named the 2006 Homecoming King at Northern Kentucky University. Popular vote was only worth 10% of the decision.

The reason that has always held close to my heart is because it was awarded to me my peers and superiors.

 

After that I would have to say all the awards and honors my son has gotten this past year from sports and the scholarships that led to his college choice to continue playing the game he loves.

Trophy as a Football Coach in the Youth League in 1993. Undefeated in the regular season and Tournament Champions. My oldest son was on the team too.

Probably the most important award I received was at high school graduation. A local award selected by high school teachers given to a student exhibiting qualities of scholarship, citizenship, loyalty to school, and leadership. It came with a monetary award of $100.00. I used the money as a down payment on a 51 Ford to drive to work and borrowed the rest from my local banker. I was a very poor tenant farm kid with a sick brother. The money really helped and years later I contributed to keep the funds available to other students.

My 2006 3A State Championship ring. The collective effort to earn those rings was incredible.

 

Outside of that, I'm proud of some of my individual accomplishments as a player. I was named on three separate All-State teams as a senior.

 

I received two academic scholarships in college that I'm really proud of too. It made college much more enjoyable.

All four kids college diplomas which led them to be gainfully employed.

Received a "Hero" Award at work for refusing to sell a firearm to a man.

 

He was trying to buy a rifle and when I went to approve the purchase the clerk and I talked to him a bit and he seemed to be unstable. He got mad and cursed when I refused to sell him a gun and walked off...10 hours later he returned and tried to buy a gun again. I saw him walking in as I was leaving and followed him back to sporting goods and once again refused to sell to him. Ended up the guy was off his meds and knew his family would have him sent back to Eastern State Hospital and he didn't want to go...he planned on killing the deputies when they came to get him which he knew would inevitably happen and wanted a gun. One of the deputies that ended up going to arrest him was a retired city policeman that worked at the Sheriff's office, he was also my Father in Law. Even though I just did what I supposed to the real reward was that nothing happened to my wife's dad or anyone else and he was arrested without any problems. He told them he planned on getting into a shootout with them but couldn't get a gun. It was a month later before anyone was able to piece all of this together.

A very good friend of mine has a son who was asked to try out earlier this year (he is a senior in HS this year) but didn't make it. He was just recently asked to try out again. Pretty cool to make that team. something like 20 NCAA Championships since 1985.

When I was 12 I came in 2nd place in a bike race. My best friend came in 1st, as he was the best at everything all the time, and I was excited to share with him this victory. This was the first trophy I had ever earned that wasn't team related.

 

In less than a year's time my psycho bipolar (at least we think she might be) 16 year old sister got mad at me and snapped the trophy in half cracking completely off its top the decorative bike from the top of the award. She knew how much the trophy meant to me.

 

She's evil.

This is the first time I've ever told anyone this as I was embarrassed to have a sister like that, and it disturbed me greatly.

She's still no joy to deal with, so I've learned after far too many attempts at common civility to take her in small does.

 

She, now at the age of 54, has the propensity to act this way still.
