But you're making the assumption that PCC and LCC play up to 5A. That may or may my be a leap at this point. LCC played up last time but PCC was aligned in 5A. With both in 4A they may stay put.

 

So if Perry and Letcher stay and play in Clay, Knox, Letcher, Perry dist. Then does JC stay and play them or try to go to 5A and drive 3 hours to play a team so they can avoid a NKY team in the playoffs. From all the stuff about Matney I have read or heard, it wouldnt shock me to see him try to do that.

If those teams stay, maybe JC will stay down and keep their current district. We all are just throwing out hypotheticals here anyways. What has always been a head scratcher since the last alignment was why Highlands, CCHS and JC all put into R4? It forced each of those schools to drive through the heart of R3 to meet each other, adding at least an extra 3-4 hours onto their total drive time to and from the game. Some say it was because the lack of 4A teams in Johnson Central's southern quadrant and the ones looking for a conspiracy will say it is because JC is being black balled. If those teams that were mentioned (Perry, Letcher, Clay, Knox) increase the total amount of teams in close proximity, I don't know why you would fight your current classification. If Perry and Letcher petition to remain up in 5A, why would you not try to move up to play those teams within an hour’s drive.

My speculation is this will be a nightmare of a can of worms the KHSAA will wish they did not open. They are going to have to pick and choose who they allow to move up and who they don't. It is impossible to do this in a reasonable, fair manner. They should have left well enough alone.

Wow...KHSAA never moves that fast. I will be shocked if something pops up on my email tomorrow, but.....you never know!

The way I read the earlier KHSAA information, if someone moves up they will offer the smallest team in the next highest class the option to move down. I didn't read it to say that someone "must" move down. I'm very curious to see how this all plays out over the next couple of months.

I hear what your saying- just don't know how they make it optional. Seems like the classes could get out of balance quick if it wasn't a one for one swap. The way I read it, you could petition to move up or down and that would only be granted depending on whether a school in the next class petitioned to move up or down. Probably worded that incorrectly.

You have wisely picked up on the problem with the new KHSAA policy, that it is possible for the classes to get wildly out of balance. Will they? Guess that depends on the amount of requests.

 

The way it is written there are no such restrictions as you were mentioning: "The Board also approved a motion to allow teams to voluntarily play into a higher class, with the only restriction being that the school in question shall remain in the class for the entire four-year period." Voluntarily. As for teams moving down, "If a team from one classification elects to play into a higher class, the lowest enrollment average school in the higher class will be given an option to move into the lower class, with every attempt being made to ensure a balance in the number of teams in classes 2A through 5A."

Seems to me the only way a team A could move up or down is if the lowest or highest team at the next level (depending on which direction the team A wanted to move) agreed to also move up or down. If they don't team A doesn't get its wish. That has to be the line in the sand. Skipping to the next school on the list until you get a taker isn't right. Might as well scrap the whole thing and create a new system for classification if your going to allow that to happen.

I personally think they're banking that no 1A team would want to do that. But yeah, I think that would be a problem. IMO if they deny any team the ability to move up based on any circumstances then they can't let any just voluntarily do it, but that's not the way it's written. I'm incredibly interested to see how all this shakes out. If this were the old 4 class system, it probably isn't a problem, but they're trying to fit too many things in with six classes.

 

 

BTW, having just gone back and read it again from a different section (the cover memo), this is what it says on playing down: "If team(s) elect to play up and the request is approved, then the smallest school in the next class up (or each class if playing up is requested multiple classes) will be given the voluntary option of moving to the class being vacated in an effort to attempt to keep the number of teams in each class approximately equal."

 

So in each case it is voluntary. Like you, I don't think logically it's a smart move, but they've made it clear they're leaving it up to the schools.
