KHSAA Board Meets About Realignment

Two things stand out

1. As Clyde mentioned, teams will have the option of playing up in class

2. The alignment will be based on 4 year average enrollment, instead of 2 year like it has been in the past. I assume this is male enrollment, not total enrollment.

So I'm wondering:

How many teams from the 4A play up to the soft landing spot in the 5A east? 4 year enrollment will keep both Highlands and CovCath in 4A...... unless of course they choose to play up. No reason they would/should but irony would abound.

Does anyone have any numbers projections for how the KHSAA will realign?

BTW I must add that I think the 4 yr enrollment with a 4 year alignment is ridiculous. That means by the end of it a team will be playing based in part on enrollments from 8 years prior.

Board met in January.

They will allow a team to play up as long as the team knows it plays up for all 4 years.

If a team does move up the smallest school in the class that the team moved up to gets the option of moving down a class.

So playing up will not on the basis of geographical isolation any longer? ....purely by the team's will, so long as they agree to play up for all 4 years?

That is the way I read it, and I think it is the way to do it.

I could see problems......what if 3 teams in a 5 team district move up? Will the remaining two teams be the whole district or will they face the hardship of joining another district and having increased travel?

I know one who's coach has said they were going to petition to move up to 5A to "get away from Highlands"

Or what if a current say 5 team 3A district has two geographically close teams from the same area wanting to move up from 2A. Is it a 7 team district now? Or do the two "movers" have to join another district and increase their travel?

Betsy Layne should move up. This year was a first round loss, if they were in 3A they may not have won region but the chances to win playoff game would increase.

Schools that could possibly petition to move based on their responses last time:

-Greenwood (Projects as 5A, requested to play up to 6A in previous alignment. They had been 6A before the opening of South Warren. Speculation is that they also wanted to get away from Bowling Green. They have failed to finish higher than 3rd in their district in any season in 5A.)

-Ohio County (Projects as 5A, initially petitioned to move up to 6A, reconsidered a month later. Initially expressed concerns about teams that had shifted down in alignment and its effect on travel. If all the teams that are slated for 5A hold, teams such as Madisonville-North Hopkins and Marshall County may move into their 5A district, perhaps moving Ohio County in with the Owensboro teams and Bowling Green, as well as Greenwood if they stayed. This would be a better geographic situation while proving far more difficult from a competitive standpoint.)

It's worth noting that if one or both of these moved up it would in many ways do the KHSAA a favor. Marshall County projects to move down and if they stayed in 5A it would leave only six "western" teams to cover Districts 1 & 2. Ohio County could fit with Daviess County, Henderson County, and McCracken County while Greenwood could go with Central Hardin, Meade County, and Muhlenberg County.

-Johnson Central (Projects as the highest 4A team, requested to move up to 5A in previous alignment. They're a lock to petition to move up, A LOCK. In each of the past alignments they have desperately sought to move away from Highlands unsuccessfully. This is just the opportunity they've been waiting for.)

-Letcher County Central (Projects as a 4A team, petitioned successfully in previous alignment to move up to 5A. Perry County Central projects to drop down, which may make it slightly less desirable.)

-Harrison County (Projects as a 4A team, requested to move up to 5A in previous alignment. Another of the likely Highlands petitions.)

-Russell County (Projects as a 4A team, requested to move up to 5A in previous alignment. Argument was pertaining to time zone concerns. There's a chance that departures in the western part of 4A could move them back in with central time zone teams, so they may be content this time.)

-Bath County (Projects as a 2A team, successfully petitioned to move up to 3A in previous alignment.)

-Betsy Layne (Projects as a 2A team, petitioned to move down to 1A in previous alignment. Would they try to go to 3A instead?)

4A west could provide some more teams requesting to play up if they decide they are unhappy with the prospects of who they will be districted with. The four year enrollment model presents the KHSAA with an incredible headache in the west. Madisonville-North Hopkins is on the borderline of being in 5A (I project second smallest 5A school) and Owensboro certainly will be, leaving the existing 4A district of Calloway County and Hopkins County Central on an island. I consider it a strong probability that at least two 4A schools will move up with perhaps a couple more, but I think it's a bit fuzzy on whether Madisonville would be given the opportunity to move down. Doss projects as the smallest 5A school. If they decided not to move, would the KHSAA give Madisonville the opportunity instead since multiple teams were moving? This could apply to any class - if 4 schools moved up into a class do all four of the smallest schools get offered the chance to move down or does the first domino have to go first?

Even if Madisonville moved down, unless a team like Paducah Tilghman or Trigg County moved up, there's still going to be a problem of a fourth team in the district. The nearest teams to the area would be Allen County-Scottsville, Franklin-Simpson, and the three Bowling Green schools (South Warren, Warren Central, Warren East). What do you do with that situation?

Can a team move up more than one class? Go from 4a to 6a or 1a to 3a?

Now that this is an option. It has been talked about it in other threads, Does Beechwood play up to 2A or stay in 1A?
