KHSAA Dead Period extended by Diocese of Covington for its schools

Featured Replies

Now a mandatory 3 week dead period for all schools in Diocese of Covington.

Reason being that families need more time to be together and coaches need more break time to be with their families.

The extra week will be tacked on prior to the start of the KHSAA Dead Period.

Love it. Good for the diocese.

Actually allows a little more time to take a vacation.

I have always thought kids dont get enough time to be a kid. But even the dead period kids are doing traveling teams in other sports.

Please note that the Diocese of Covington has decided to extend the "Dead Period" for all Diocean Schools starting next summer. This is being done in an effort to provide more time for families and to ease some pressure off student/athletes. The Dead Period will now be June 23 thru July 13

Most excellent.

it's time the rest of the state does the same. I love sports, and my kids love to play sports. But an extra week or two to get away from it all would be welcome.

Am a bit surprised by the comments, not that I am unhappy with them, just surprised! I felt for sure that the DOC would be thrown into the hot coals for doing this but with the comments so far, I would not be surprised to see the KHSAA starting this policy soon.

While I believe the DOC Catholic HS will be put at somewhat of a disadvantage, the advantages to those kids families and to them and the coaches and their families, will far outweigh the negative!

A lot of people don't realize what the coaches families give up in vacation time and time with Dad or Mom, so this policy will benefit those wives/husbands of the coaches and their children! Good for the DOC!

What a great idea. Sure hope some of the public schools pick up on this.

It is a good thing. There are Juniors and Seniors that use the dead period to visit colleges

The fact is that most of our players will not be recruited for football but several will continue

to higher education on academic aid

I don't think there is any disadvantage for the schools. One week isn't going to make or break a season.

Family ahead of sports. What a novel concept.:thumb:

Agreed.

But that one week could be huge for a kid in terms of visting elderly out-of-town grandparents, going on a school mission trip, college visits, ACT prep classes, summer jobs, family vacations, and just plain old being a carefree teenager.
